Saydie Roling "Paranoid"

10x8, Colored Pencil, Newspaper, and Ink, 2021

My idea for this came from a mix of things. The jar of eyes was a representation of lyrics from the song "You’d Be Paranoid Too" by Waterparks. Specifically the line, “eyes in my closet, hands in my pockets,”. The other thing that came into this was American Horror story, the show. Certain scenes had stuck out and mixed into the shading and look of the eyes and gave them their darker look. My process for this was to find the perfect pieces of newspaper and pens that would make this come to life. I started piece by piece adding on the eyes and making sure that the pieces would connect like a puzzle. I started with the outline, added the white colored pencil for the background, and used ball point pens to add the detail. This artwork really means that there are always going to be eyes watching, even if you do not realize it. If someone were to see my work of art I want them to take the eye as something that makes sense to the viewer. I want them to interpret however they see it. The most difficult part of this piece of work was getting the pieces to fit together. To get over this struggle I glued the pieces together then lightly added the eyes that would overlap. If I were to start this project over, I would try to focus on making the eyes all a little more similar in size. If I had to put this under a style of art, I think it would fit the best into realistic. While it was not made to look as real as it would, I still do think it would fit under this category. It is unique to me because of the meaning behind it. It fits into how I see the song and how it fits into my own mind. I really do love the way that the eyes on the bottom and sides of the jars turned out. I enjoy how my shading looks there and the perspective.

Saydie Roling "Strangest Dream of All"

Size, Marker, Pencil, Colored Pencil, and Ink, 2021

The idea behind this piece of art came from the song "Ice Bath" by Waterparks. I took how the song felt to me, the color, the imagery, everything, and put it on the paper. It evolved quickly with everything getting put into the paper somehow. My process started with me first drawing the portrait in the bottom. It is an image of Awsten Knight during the dream he is having while this picture takes place. After that I added in all the words in order that they appear. I used a lot of different tools while making this. Some of those being markers, colored pencils, and many different types of pens. This artwork was made to look like what is going on inside Awstens head during his dream. It was meant to be cluttered and like a lot is happening. I want my audience to see this and think about what the words are saying and how the imagery works together. The most difficult part of this was trying to get the words in here howI wanted them to fit. I could not quite figure out how to get everything I wanted to fit in. I overcame this by putting everything in and making it all work somehow, this way nothing was left out. If I were to start over I would change the color of a couple things and change the position just because I do not love the final position, especially the 4001. I would say that this piece of art is abstract because it did not have a guideline and I just added to it however I felt fit. It is unique to myself because no one else would view the song the same way that I do. I really love how the words surrounding Awsten turned out. It really brought the cluttered look together and to me gave a focal point on Awsten.

Saydie Roling "Lowkey"

Size, Ink, Newspaper, and Magazine Paper, 2021

My idea from this piece came from a drawing a friend of mine made from all one line. I saw this line art and wanted to make my own take on it. My process started as making the outline of the man and filling him in only using one line per color. I decided that this was not enough, so I cut him and made a collage of fully red and black colors to fit his theme. I decided to tape the background together underneath because I am not a fan of glue and how it ripples paper. For this artwork, I did not have a real meaning behind it. I just wanted to take my photo I used for inspiration and make it how I imagined it instead of the boring plain picture. I just want my audience to see this and piece together how the background ties together with the front image. The most difficult part of this piece was getting the lines to stay straight and relatively close to one another. It was very hard to not just doze off and let the sharpie pick its own path. If I were to start over I would definitely wait longer before erasing some of the light pencil lines. Small parts of the sharpie have smudged and I would redo that if I could. This piece is definitely abstract. It is unique to my own style because I chose to make the background on how the picture made me feel. It made me feel like it was darker and red but still had its lighter moments, hence the pink. I really love how the background pushes forward the focal point. You really notice the lines and then are met with a nice collage when you wander to the background.

Saydie Roling "Miss Me"

Size, Charcoal, 2021

The idea from this artwork came from the EP, Scared of Everything by Zeph. From listening to this EP, I started to think about what images I could picture from it and how Zeph felt during the song. The process for this piece was pretty big. It started out as a sketch, then turned into a bigger piece made with colored pencils, about half way through I decided I hated it. So, I started over. I made it with charcoal this time to give it a darker feel instead of bright and happy. The basic meaning behind this meaning is that the girl in the water is just chilling and is not afraid of the water that is continuing to rise. I want my audience to see this and see something similar, because it is pretty obvious when you see it. The most difficult part of this for me was that I had never used charcoal before so it was a completely new experience. To overcome my struggles I just took my time and practiced a little bit on a separate sheet to get a feel of what I was doing. I would think that this piece is pretty realistic. It is not meant to look like something you would see in real life but an animated version of it. It is unique to me because no one else probably views a song the same way that I do so it was personal to me. I really love how the charcoal ended up looking and am very glad that I decided to try out something new.
