Saydie Roling "Peach"

size, used, 2021

The idea behind my peach was just the fact that my favorite song is called Peach (Lobotomy). So, I originally wanted to make a peach with a needle sticking out of it but switched over to just a normal peach with no add ons. Some places I got ideas for this were from Twitter and my own friends' digital art. I wanted to bring the peach to life. To make the Peach I used clay and a foam ball to give them the circle shape I was looking for. I used a flat tool to help smooth out the sides, and to give a little dip in it. I really just want my audience to see this as a peach, because that is what it is meant to be. While to me it has a little bit of a deeper meaning relating to the song I mentioned above. I do not expect people to see anything other than what I made and that is what I had in my head when I built it. The most difficult part of making my peach was making it the circle shape and a smooth texture. I had to cut it out of the bowl and then wait for it to get hard enough to even piece back together. I overcame this by staying patient and taking my time to make sure that it would not fall apart. If I were to start this project over, I would change the area I selected for the leaf and stem and dip and flip it to the other side. This is realistic art I would say, it is just a simple peach. There is nothing too strange about it to make it something else. It is unique to my style of art because I made it as I see a peach instead of trying to make it look as real as possible. I really love how the glaze turned out on this because I think it really pulled together the whole look of it and made it a finished product.

Saydie Roling "Slump Drape"

Size, Clay, 2021

The idea for my work came from the class and just talking about it. I knew I wanted the bigger bowl to be simple and the design not to cover the whole area. The process for this project was to put the slab of clay over a ring so that it could fall down and create a bowl shape. I also used a bowl and let my clay drape over it and give it a ripple effect. I used a stencil to press down onto the clay to make a design on top of my bowls. To me this item does not have a huge meaning behind it. It is simply just a bowl that can be used for anything that you want. The most difficult thing for me was getting the chip bowl to have a good shape because I made it over a foam ball with the edges straight. If I were to start this project over I would make a different design on my dip bowl. I think that the design is too big for the size of the bowl. I would say that this fits under abstract because of the design on it. The chip bowl has a half leaf over it while the dip bowl just has little diamonds covering it. I think what makes this unique to me is how I chose to do my designs. I chose to do the half leaf because I thought it looked better if it was only covering a small portion. I really love the colors that I chose for glaze, I think that they really represent me.

Saydie Roling "Slip Container"

Size, Clay, 2021

My idea behind this one was to make my container look like a small cookie jar. My idea was just to make something small and round with a small round lid. My process behind this was I made a long slab and made it into a cylinder adn then added a bottom to it. I made another circle for the lid with a small lip so it would fit onto it. I added little legs to the bottom and ball on top of the lid to make it a workable container to hold all my slip. There was no symbolic imagery behind this project, it was just meant to be a small container to hold my slip for now and later it can be used for anything I find to fit. The most difficult part was getting the edges of the container to be smooth and flat. I overcame the struggles by taking my time and using a wet sponge to really help smooth the sides. If I were to start over I would make the lid fit onto the container better, I would say that this is realistic art because it was just built to be a small container and that is what it ended up being. This is unique to me because of the glaze and the color I chose for it. I really love how the end product came out, especially the lid because I think it looks really good.

Saydie Roling "Face"

Size, Clay, 2021

My idea for this project really came from me wanting to make some type of face but not wanting a realistic piece. Scrolling through some Pinterest also helped me really get my full idea with the vase on the back. The process for this was that I made the flat oval front and added on the features of the face. After I did that, I made a vase, but only half of it so that it could attach to the back of the face oval slab. I connected the two pieces and made it one full vase. This artwork does not really have a deep meaning. It was just made to be used as a vase but dressed up a little bit. I want people to look at it and think about how it is different and not a typical boring piece. The most difficult part of this piece for me was getting the back of the actual vase how I wanted it. I struggle with maintaining the cracks and getting it to sit in place. If I were to start over I would focus more on the facial features and keep the cracks to a minimum. This is an abstract piece I would say. It does not really fit into a realistic view because it is supposed to be a free forming face. I really love the colors of the glaze I chose. The darker blue background really helps to pull forward the bright white of the features.

Saydie Roling "Primary Colors"

Size, Clay, 2021

The idea behind this piece came from a mug I had previously seen before made by someone named Amy Nelson. While mine is obviously not identical to make it my own, I really liked how she had a light background and multicolored dots around it. To make this I started with a big slab and a small circle for the base. I connected the two and left it at that before adding the circles. I decided to make it more of a container rather than a mug. I really just wanted a basic cup. There was not a lot of meaning to this, other than I was not able to get Amy’s mug when they went on sale. I want others to see it and just think of a small expressive cup. The most difficult thing for this piece was that I couldn't not figure out if I wanted a handle and if I did what I wanted it to look like. I decided to not have one and just that it was better off without it. If I started over I would add more little circle dots to it to give it more color. This to me would be considered abstract. It is unique to me because it has a little bit more meaning to me than the next person to see it. I really love how the bright white background looks in contrast to the primary colors of the circles.
