Reagan Hofer "Abstract Shapes"

For my first painting, I wanted to get to experiment with all of the different colors. I really wanted to branch out and use bright colors that would stand out. So my design was really just a bunch of shapes but with highlights of bright colors within them. I first saw this idea on google as a background for your home page. Some of the shapes I really like but others I didn’t put in. The picture on google was also just plain shapes with no highlights. I started my process by painting the background all black. I had to let it dry for an entire class so when I came back I had a plan. I knew what shapes I wanted just not the colors yet. So I started by mixing my paint to get a light green and a dark green. Those were the first shapes that I did and I just put them in random places. Then I did the same thing with purple, blue, red, and yellow. But when I went to paint my orange it wasn’t showing up on the black very great even after I did a second and third coat. So then the next coat I did over the orange was white. Then when the white was dry I went to put a coat of orange over it and it worked perfectly. When people look at my artwork I want them to think of the 80s. I think that the 80s was a very iconic time for still-life artwork and fashion, and I think that my artwork is bringing some of that back. The shapes are similar, the colors are bright and fun. I think that the most challenging thing for me to do was to start. I didn’t know what to start doing and I didn’t really have a plan. I think that is why I am pushing my portrait painting off because I don’t know where to start. If I were to start over and do this again I would space the shapes apart better. Some of the placing I am not happy with and some of the shapes are too close together. I would say that the type of art is abstract because the spacing isn’t perfect, it’s not symmetrical, and the colors aren’t realistic. I think that it is my own style because the colors are so bright and I love that. The black background really makes the colors pop even more than they already did.

My first thought going into this painting was that I knew I wanted to do something different with water and mountains. But I didn’t want to do a realistic painting either and I love bright colors. I got on Pinterest and found a piece pretty similar to this. But the colors were much different. I first started with the orange sky and pink ground as my base because those were my lightest colors and I was going to go with a darker blue over them. Then I did the teal water along with the blue mountains. After that, I did the yellow sun and grey clouds. Lastly, I did all of the highlights for the different colors. I think that the hardest part was getting the sizes of everything just right so it would all look good together and not one color was overpowering another. If I had to start over I think that I would pick a lighter orange color. The one I have now is fine but in the end I wish is was more of a peachy orange. This piece is abstract, and it’s my own style because of the bright colors. I love bright colors and I think that they work well with each other.
