My idea for the pitcher was to make it sort of unique. It started as an assigned task and I wasn't sure what to do with it. Then, I just sort of kept going with it and went with the flow. I started with a lump of clay and put it through the slab roller. I used a pointed carving tool and outlined how I wanted the pitcher to look. Then, I used a pattern and indented it into the clay. Next, I connected the two ends of the clay to make a pitcher shape. To smooth it out and shape the top, I used a flat silicone tool. After it was fired, I used a blue glaze to coat it. The artwork doesn't have much meaning. There isn't any special symbolic background for this piece. I wanted to make something different that I could use at home. I have never really worked with clay before, so keeping the clay moist was a big problem for me. At first, it started too wet and heavy so it wouldn't hold up by itself. While I was waiting for it to dry out a tad, it ended up drying out too much so I had to restart completely because it wouldn't move. I finally figured out how to properly keep my clay from drying out. If I were to start over, I would change the shape of it and make it better. This would be a realistic art style because it is a real item. I think the pattern and color made it especially unique to my art style. I'm very fond of using colors like green and blue. I really like how the color turned out. I think it's a gorgeous shade of blue.
My idea for this piece was simply just because I like flowers. The petals are indented so it can be used as a jewelry holder. I also like jewelry and have so much of it and want to be able to have someone to put it. To start off, I took a slab of clay and put it through the slab roller to make sure it was flat. Then, I started forming the petals with a metal carving tool. It took some time to get the petals even enough to my liking. Then, I created a circle in the middle for the middle of the flower, also to make it easier for me to tell where I needed a different color of glaze. I used a deep purple glaze for the petals and a grey glaze for the middle. I did 5 coats for the petals to make sure it was covered completely and shaded well. I did 3 coats for the middle. The artwork might not have much meaning to others, but for me, it shows two things that I like, flowers and jewelry. My audience might not think much about it, but people who know me personally will be able to think it makes sense for me to make. The most difficult part for me was shaping the petals. It was very frustrating. I just kept trying because I wanted it to be 'perfect'. After I tried again for the 5th time, I realized that it doesn't have to be perfect. Nothing is perfect, and flowers come in all different shapes and sizes. If I were to redo it, I would probably sand some places better. This is a realistic piece of artwork, seeing as flowers are real. I think the fact that it's not perfect makes it unique to my art style. Along with the color. I really like using the cooler colors. I really love the purple color I decided to do for the petals. I think it looks really pretty with the grey.
My idea for this magnet was something totally different. I started off wanting to make a sun, but that didn't work out very well. I started with a small slab of clay and shaped a circle. I then made a curved line to make the sun 'rays' with a metal shaper tool. I used the first line to make the other 5. I used the scratch and slip method to connect the lines to the circle. I used the slip to ensure it stayed in place. After it was fired, I painted it like a turtle because it looked more like one over a sun like I had intended. I used a lighter shade of brown to make the lines of the shell, and mixed white and green paint to make little spots over the green. My artwork didn't have much meaning, I was stuck on what to make and decided to choose something seemingly simple. The most difficult part for me was for sure connecting everything. I made this when we had just started the class so I didn't really know what I was doing. I had tried to make it once before, but it broke because the lines or arms weren't connected right and were very thin. If I were to start over, I would try harder to make the lines and make them more even and connected better. This is realistic artwork because turtles are in fact real. I think the messy look of it is what makes it unique to my style because everything of mine is sort of messy. I really like the color of green I used, and the spots on it.
My inital idea for this pot was to make a pot with a lid. That didn't happen though. I got this idea from my flower, to add the flower as a lid. As I kept it going, I decided I wasn't a fan of how it was looking so I just made a pot. I started with a curvy slab, to match the flower, but after I discarded the idea and my work. I put it through the coil press again and made a circular pot. Then, I flattened the sides with my hands, slip, and a flat rubber tool. After I got it to my liking, I put it through the kilm. Then, I chose a deep green color to glaze with. I did around 5 or 6 coats to make sure it was coated to my liking and darker. My artwork just shows the color that make me feel calmer. The deep green brings me a sense of comfort and I can hold things like flowers, water, and other random things. The most difficult part for me was flattening and shaping it to my liking. It took me a long while to finally get it flat. It's still not perfect. It's sort of slanted, either way, I like it. If I were to start over, I would probably add more details to it so it wasn't so plain. Wether it be a lid, or something on the side, I wish it wasn't so plain. This is a Non- objective work of art. I think like all my work, it isn't perfect & perfectly flat, and I think that makes it unique. I really do like the color of this and how its not perfect. Art should be different for everybody and nobody makes a perfect piece of art, and I really like that.
