Lucas Burken "Dogs"
8x6, Pencil, 2025
My idea was to make a pencil drawing for my mom of our dogs. The dog on the right has been our best dog ever and my moms favorite dog. He is getting older in age so I wanted to make her something to remember him by. How did you get the idea and how did it evolve? I got the idea because my mom was talking about how she doesn't want to lose him and he will never be able to be replaced.
My process was to draw the outlines of the dogs and than start the shading and coloring of them. I used erasers, pencils and a blending stick when needed.
My artwork means that dogs are humans best friends and are irreplaceable. I want my audience to think about the time they spend with their dogs and how they treat them.
The most difficult for me was the shading around the faces and drawing the mouth on the black dog because he's so dark it was hard to show his tongue and mouth outline. I asked for advice from my teacher on how to do the outlines on the faces. I would change the original picture and pick one where the dog wasn't sideways if I could change something.
The style of art is realistic because I am drawing the dogs as original and not changing anything. I love how the faces turned out and the legs on the black dog.
