Second Semester of Sophomore Year, 2025
2 1/4" x 0.5" x 2 1/4", Stoneware & Acrylic Paint, 2025
My idea was to create a little ladybug magnet. I got the idea from things I care about and tattoos my parents have. I got the inspiration from my mom and dad's tattoos they got when I was born.
I started by creating the ladybug's body and I created the wings, carving the spots and split. Next, I painted it with black on spots and body then red for the wings. I used the rolling pin to flatten it out and a carving tool for the spots. To connect the two I used the score and slip method.
It is meant to show how you can create something meaning full out of a nickname. I want people to think about how you can turn something meaningful into art. The symbolism is the ladybug itself as that was alway kind of a nickname for me. Plus, my parents both got tattoos of one when I was born.
The hardest part was simply thinking of a subject for the piece. I overcame this by just thinking about who I am and my childhood. I would have tried to get every part fully painted.
This piece is a surreal piece of a real animal. I alway like to connect something close to my piece which makes this close to my own style. I love the way it is a pretty close to a match of the ladybugs on my dad's tattoo.
3" x 4" x 1/16", Stoneware & Acrylic Paint, 2025
My idea was to create a magnet based on my favorite musical, Hadestown. I thought of making the lamp but decided the carnation would be a better symbol for the musical. I I was inspired by the carnation give to Persephone from Hades during Hadestown.
I started by wedging the clay and rolling it into a slab. Then I cut out the general shape and details. I then painted it after it was fired. I used a rolling pin and cutting tool to create the base. Then I used red, green, and black acrylic paint to the rest.
It is meant to symbolize the musical Hadestown I got to see in January. I want the audience to think about how they can turn something you love into art.
The hardest part was creating the petal details. To over come this I took my time and rolled with the punches. I would have made the lines of black to dark red in order to make it natural.
This piece is a surreal creation of the flower. It is similar to my own style because I like to create art for the fandoms I am in. I like the way the petals turned out even it their a little messy.
7"x 6 1/4"x 1 3/4", Stoneware & Glaze, 2025
My idea was to create a darted pitcher with a handle. I got the idea with the curve by looking at some of the templates my teacher got out. I got the inspiration from looking at the patterns and looking for ones that look like flowers.
I flattened the slab for the body using the slab roller and to get the pattern I rolled a pattern onto the slab. Plus, I slip and scored the base and edges to form the shape. Then I rolled out a coil out and scored & slipped the ends for the handle. I used the slab roller to make the slab and a place mat to create the pattern. I used the score and slip method to join ends together. Finally, I used Arctic Blue, Chum Plum, and Iron Yellow glaze to cover the pitcher.
The piece is supposed to be a demonstration of my beginning pottery skills. I want the audience to think about how they can turn a new skill into a fulfilling hobby. There really isn't any symbolism in this piece as it is my first completed piece.
I had a hard time to create the curve in the pitcher. I overcame this by simply going with the flow and let the curve be curvy. I would make the handle bigger in order to increase the strength.
This piece is objective as it is used to poor water. I like the way the shape of the pitcher turned out.
Small: 4 1/4" x 1 3/8" Large: 7"x 1.5", Stoneware & Glaze, 2025
My idea was to create a drape bowls to hold my rings and random stuff. I got the idea from thinking about how much small trinkets lay around and they need somewhere to go. I got the inspiration from some ring holders my mom has at home.
I rolled out the clay into a slab then set a pattern into it. I then set it in a styrofoam ring to create the bowl shape. After that I glazed it with various colors. I used the slab roller and a place mat to get the starting part done. Then I pressed it into a styrofoam circle and after it fired I used Arctic Blue, Iron Yellow, Tourmaline, Emerald Green, and Chum Plum for the glaze.
The drape bowls are meant to be a storage system for jewelry and random things. I want the audience to think about how to turn something useful into a piece of art.
The hardest part was creating the curve in the bowl to make it bowl shaped. I kept patting it down and leaving it in the ring to dry before going to the kiln. I would have made the medium bowl a lot smoother around the edges.
This piece is an objective piece as it is used to hold rings. love how the glaze turned out.
4 7/8" x 2.5" x 3 7/8", Stoneware & Glaze, 2025
My idea was to create an expressive statue based off of a YouTube series. I got it from an episode that involved snails and turned into one that was based on a specific you-tuber. I was inspired by a snail I saw in a youtube video.
I started by creating a big cylinder and a skinny, long cylinder to for the shell and body. I then connected them and carved out the snail. Next, I created the base that the snail can sit on. Then I created and added the flowers and antenas. I used slip and score to combing the cylinders and used a scraper to remove the inside clay. I used the slab roller and another carving tool to create the base flowers, connecting them with slip and scoring. Also I rolled out a coil to make it's antenna. Finally I glazed the statue with Chum Plum and Oatmeal.
The piece is meant to be a fan art piece to one of my favorite youtube series. I want the audience to think about how you can turn something you enjoy to a piece of art. The color of the shell is meant to be symbolic to one of the you-tubers being on her "last life".
I struggled to carve the interior clay to thin it out. To overcome this I took my time and check the sides often to check the thickness. I would have chose a lighter orange glaze for the shell.
This piece is an abstract piece of a real animal. It's unique to my style as I like to add easter eggs of things I love to my art. I really like how the flowers ended up coming out.
Board: 4.75" x 2.5" x 5.5", Pieces: 7/8" x 3/4" 1/4", Stoneware, Glaze, & Acrylic Paint, 2025
My idea was to create a tic tac toe board. I decided to give it a little cliff side to give it a pond inspired piece. I was inspired by some other tic tac toe boards I saw on Pinterest.
I first created a slab and a coil then slip and scored them together. The next thing I did was create a mound and carved it out to create the cliff and waterfall. I took another slab and created the lily pads and frogs. used the slab roller to make the board and pieces. Then I used the carving tool for the board, inside the cliff, and the outline of the waterfall. Finally I used Lagoon, Emerald Green, and Deep Olive Speckle for the glaze. As well, I used black, white, and green acrylics to paint the cliff side.
The artwork is meant to be a way to connect with your family with games. I want them to think about how they can turn a useful thing into a piece of art. The frog heads and lily pads are meant to be the xs and os of the game.
The hardest part was creating the pieces. I overcame this by powering through or taking a break and work on a different part. I would have made the base bigger if I was to start over.
This piece is a surreal art style. It's similar to my own still because I like to create cutesy things. I love how the lily pad pieces came out.
4.5" x 4.5" x 5", Stoneware, Glaze, & Acrylic, 2025
My idea was to create a cute duck flower pot. It started as just being the face and wings but I decided to add some feet to bring some life. It's inspired by a sticker I have on my sketchbook of a round little duck.
I started by rolling out a slab for the pot base and walls, along with the face and feet. Then I got small mounds of clay to create the wings. I connected these with the score and slip method. I used the cutting tool to cut out the face, and feet. Also, I used the slab roller to create most of the pieces.
This was meant to be a way to use an animal and turn it into a useful thing. I want people to think about how they can turn an animal into a piece of art.
The hardest part was making the walls of the pot fit together. I took my type and thought about ways I could make them connect. I would have made its feet a bit smaller.
This piece is a surreal take on a real animal. It is similar to my own style because I like to make things cute and silly. I absolutely love how derpy the face is.
2.5" x 2.25" x 0.5", Stoneware & Acrylic Paint, 2025
I had an idea to create some more snails to go with my one statue. I had the idea from a pair of keychains I have with my friend that matches. This time it was in snail form and little statues. I got this idea from a YouTube series me and my friend both like.
I created two coils to make the body and shell. Then I rolled them up to create the shell and pressed the bottom for a base. I also painted one green and brown, the other peach and pink. I used the slip and score method to keep the shells rolled up. Then I used acrylic paint and paintbrushes to color the snails.
This piece is meant to be a take on the invisible string theory and how two people can meet each other in every universe. I want the audience to think about how to turn an idea into a meaningful piece of art. The snails are a symbol for the people that meet in every lifetime.
Having to use the rest of my clay in a short amount of time. I just took a deep breath and powered through. I would have cleaned up the edges of shell ridges.
This is meant to be a surreal piece of work. It's unique to my own style as I like to tie cute things and hobbies into my work. I like the idea that followed the piece.
Turquoise: 4.25"x 4.25"x 4.75" Magenta: 4.5"x 4.5" 2.5" Big: 5"x 5"x 2.5" Small: 3.25" x 3.25" x 2", Stoneware & Glaze, 2025
The idea was to create a set of bowls using the wheels. I got this idea as I have always wanted to use the wheels to make something this year. Though it never really evolved beyond this idea. I was inspired by the stoneware you see in the store.
I started by wedging my clay before wetting my wheel and throwing the clay on. Then, I worked on starting to center the clay which to a while and I started to form the bowl by pressing in and down. Once it was finished I used the wire to cut them off the wheel. After I fired it I used four different glazes to add a pop of color. To get the finished look I used the wheel and a needle to narrow out the bottom. To glaze I used Blue Midnight, Light Sepia, Artic Blue, & Smokey Merlot, using a paint brush to apply 3 coats.
I had a hard time creating the bowls themselves. In order to overcome this I took a step back and tried again before aking for help if I needed it. If I was to start over I would make the walls of the matching set thinner.
The style of this piece is non-objective. There is no part of this set that is unique to my own style besides the fact that I like to use shades of blue in my art. I love the way the magenta bowl turned out.
4.75"x 4.75"x 2.25", Stoneware & Glaze, 2025
The idea was to create a textured flower pot using a coconut bowl. I got the idea from a guest artist that came in and showed us how to make it. Though it didn't turn out as textured as it should have been. I was inspired by the artist's technique.
I used a coconut bowl to press bits of clay into a bowl like shape to create a flower pot. With the use of a plastic straw I made three holes to drain the water. Once it was out of the bowl and fired I used Cosmic Tea Dust, Sapphire Float, and Blue Rutile glaze to add some depth. To do this I used a paint brush to apply a few coats of each.
The hardest part was understanding how the artist was placing the clay. To overcome this I did my own interpretation of how she did it. If I was to start over I would have made the clay into small balls prior to placing it in the mold.
This piece is in the style of non-objective art. It's sort of unique to my own style as I like to find a way to put plus into every piece. I love the way the glitter turned out on the outside wall.
Paint, Cardboard, Clay, Photos, & IMovie, 2025
The story takes place on the edge of the forest where a flower is slowly withering a way. Throughout its decline of life a butterfly passes by looking for the final traces of nutrients. Towards the end snow started to fall as the flower disappears.
To create the background we painted and hot glued two cardboard pieces to design a fall background with cotton balls as clouds. The flower took a while to create but in the end we made it out of clay and wire with a fake flower on top. Though there was an attempt to create the petals out of clay but it wouldn't come together. This video is a surreal take on a real event in a flower's life.
