Grace Hendrickson "Late Night Drive"
Size, Acrylic on Canvas, 2024
My idea was to find some sort of landscape for my first painting. So I looked it up on Pinterest and found something similar to what I painted. Then I changed a few details and kind of made it my own.
I first started it by sketching all of it out before painting it. Then I painted the base colors and started working on the grass. Once I finished the background I made the part of the road that had the car on it. The last thing I painted was the light on the road in the distance and the power lines.
I didn't really put any meaning behind it. It's supposed to give a calm and dark feeling. I want people to think about taking a long car ride by yourself peacefully at night.
The most difficult part was trying to get the shading right on the lit-up part by the car. It was hard making a lighter color for the road and the grass that looked realistic. If i could change anything i would definitely add more detial to the grass and make the sky blend better.
I would say its realistic. I love that you can tell where the light is and that you can tell that it's actually a car on the road.
Grace Hendrickson "Spring Time Blooming"
8'12', Acrylic on Canvas, 2024
I wanted to paint some type of springtime scene for my landscape painting so I looked on Pinterest and found something to base my painting on. I wanted to copy the picture completely but i changed the colors on the flower because i felt like it fit better with the other colors.
I first started off with two base colors, blue and green and then began blending the sky with various shades of blue to get a cloud-like effect. I then started blending the grass. I later added bright yellow, blue, and red flowers but later changed them to pastel green, blue, yellow, and pink.
My painting is like a sign of spring. Something calm, warm and welcoming. Kind of like a patch of bright wildflowers growing on the side of the road out in the country. I want everyone to think of that small window of nice spring weather.
The most difficult part was getting the texture right for the grass and finding the right colors for the flowers. It took me a while to get the flowers right because i had to ad darker colors underneath to add dimension.
I would say it's realistic. I love how bright the flowers are and how good the sky looked above.
Grace Hendrickson "Lily Pad Serenity"
N/A, Acrylic on Canvas, 2024
For my idea, I originally wanted to paint a farm animal but realized that wasn't really me so I decided to paint koi fish. They are relatively calm and I had never painted a water scene before so I wanted to try it.
I first started with the water background. I blended various shades of greens and mostly blues. Next, I moved on to the base colors of the fish, which are white and orange. I then added lots of details to the fish such as gills, fins, and scales. Then I added the lily pads in the remaining space around them. Then I added bubbles and movement to the water before adding a thin blue varnish of paint over the fish so it looked like they were underwater. Then I decided it needed more pop to it so I added flowers to the lily pads and petals in the water.
My painting is supposed to give a calming feeling. I remember going over to my grandparents neighbors house and watching their koi fish swim peacefully like they had not a care in the world and I wanted to be that fish. I wanted everyone to find that peace just like those koi fish did.
The most difficult part was getting the fine lines on the fish. Trying to get the white and orange parts nice and clean was very difficult.
I would say it's realistic. I love how bright the flowers are and the movement and bubbles in the water.
Grace Hendrickson "Turning 15"
8'12, Acrylic on Canvas, 2024
For my idea, i wanted to create a set of realistic candles similar to the ones i have on my birthday cake every year. My parents save my candles from past years so when i turned 15, we used the 1 from my first birthday and 5 from my fifth birthday. I started with the background of blue and the brown table that the candles are sitting one. I then moved onto the shadow under the candles. I then worked on the candles and finally the flames.
My painting is supposed to give a lonely feeling but not necessarily a bad one. Sometimes being alone is okay and you have to learn to be your own light.
The most difficult part was the flames and the glow from the flames.
I would say it's realistic. I love how from a distance it seems like an actual picture.
