Grace Hendrickson "Supreme Friendship"
9x12, Graphite on Paper, 2023
We were told to choose a picture that we've taken and to either draw it in color, black and white, or a mix. So I chose this photo because I am better at drawing buildings and backgrounds than i am people which is why I chose a photo of me in my friend where the focal point is the building and also us.
I started out by gridding it so I can get the proportions right and decided to go square by square instead of sketching it out first because it was going to take to long. I used my regular mechanical pencil to draw this and I used a cotton ball to make the clouds. I did get the proportions off so i'm only using the photo as a reference really and putting my own spin on it.
It doesn't really have much meaning to it besides friendship. I'm emphisizing the building more and in the end the people will be one of the focal points as well.
The most difficult part was adding in every little detail and ultimately decided to leave some parts out and drawing it the way I want to. The hardest part was getting everything the right shade because obviously using the pencil that I use everyday the lead inside isn't always going to be the exact same as it was the time I used it. One of the hardest parts was the faces. Since me and my friend are so small it's hard adding good detail onto it.
I would classify it as realistic but since I didn't do much blending its less realistic but it looks the way i wanted it to.
