Grace Mosier "Creation of Hope and Transformation"
20x16, Mixed Media/Social Issue, 2022
My idea was to create a piece that would represent items we would normally throw away as a unique art piece. I have always been drawn to art made of trash and lost objects but never created one myself. It wasn't a specific idea really, I just knew I wanted to involve a butterfly and the color purple. When I drew my sketch I wanted to have newspaper all behind the butterfly but when I started painting it became a big swirl that looked like a portal. I decided to throw some newspaper randomly like it was being drug into the spiral. So I first started with the background and then decided how I was going to layer pieces together. I have incorporated a variety of plastic from different objects, jewels or gems, beads, colored yarn, newspaper, metal from tin drink cans, and foam shapes. My work is supposed to symbolize the beauty in everything that was used already. Made of things that people would normally never use again or would melt down and Reuse for something else. Even trash that normally seems disgusting can be used to make a beautiful and intriguing work of art. This work style is Surreal and mixed media.
Grace Mosier “Color is/in Emotion” (Three Part Series)
Size, Narrative and Identity, 2022
My idea for this series was to show how color compliments how emotions work in people. The brain works so strangely. I thought I would create one of my own emotional themes. The first named “Cool Feelings” I have incorporated colors such as Greens, Blues, Purples, Grays, we would show as calm, soothing, even sad and thoughtful, creative. It even taps into memories from the past and ones to come. It flows like a river starting from one point and keeps the flow going. The second piece is “Hot Feelings”. I use Reds, Oranges, Yellows, and Whites. These show the furious, mad, distraught, harmful feelings that come out of us. There are hints of flames in fire, there is even a sense of naturalness that looks like blood. We all have these emotions and sometimes they are hard to control. But then we take a look at the last piece. Where all of the emotions come together. Named “Simply Chaos” this is our emotions at their peak where they are simply existing together. Not in conflict. Not apart. Just being emotions. Incorporation of all the colors makes them compliment themselves. Throwing some waves, some spirals, and some bubbles to show that it may not last long but as long as we have those emotions under control for a while. It's ok. I really enjoy painting things like this because it is so relaxing and you can make up whatever you want for it. My favorite to paint was the last piece because it shows all the colors together and really represents what humans can be at their best.
