Greenley Grell "A Small Train But Great Memory"
8x10, Acrylic Painting , 2025
My idea with this painting was to paint an item that ment a lot to me. I choose this train because my Great-Grandpa Gonz worked with trains his whole life and collected these little toy like trains. So after he passed, I asked for one to keep. The train sits on the desk in my room, but for this I wanted to paint it on my families kitchen table.
This painting started with me painted the canvas a solid tan. I then got a reference picture and then used that and trace paper to get all of the little details onto the canvas. From there I then started with the two chair. Then I did the train and the table. This painting was pretty challenging and had a lot of little details. The background is painted with not a lot of detail to give the focus on the train. Most of my time with this painting I was trying to get clean lines. After the background looked good, I got help from Miss. Garity and she helped me add the highlights onto the table and the train. After that I just touched it up. I had to use a lot of blending in this painting, and for small details like the numbers I used a paint marker.
My intention with this painting is to have the veiwers main focus on the train. This artwork means a lot to me because it was my Great- Grandpas. I used this painting to kind of represent him and something he deeply loved.
The thing that was most difficult with this art piece was the table. I had a really hard time with the highlights. There was a lot of diffrent colors that needed to be added and it wasn't a solid color. I overcame this by asking Miss. Garity for help, she gave me a lot of helpful advice. If I started over I would change the table. It is still not my favorite but I also don't know what I would change about it.
The style of this artwork is realistic. This is unique to me because it was my Great-Grandpa's and he collected these, so nobody can really relate to my painting. I love how it means something to me, and is not just another painting.
