Ayla Riffel "Fiona and I "

18x24, acrylic paint on canvas board, 2022

For this artwork my idea was to paint me and my dog sleeping. This is my narrative work so explains myself. I love my dog but I'm never at home much anymore. The reason I painted us in my bed was because she comes to my room every night to sleep and thats when I get to see her the most. I wanted to use different colors and patterns to express what I like and thats what I did. First I outlined myself, Fiona, the head board, the pillows, and the prints on the different surfaces. Then I needed to decide what color I would make everything, It took a long time to get the dogs face to look like my dog. Also trying to make the perfect hair color was challenging I still don't think I got it right. There is symbolism between this artwork like I said before Im not really home much I'm either working or with my friends so when I am its usually at night and she sleeps with me every night. If I could start over I would position myself differently I think it would just make the artwork look so much better. This pice of artwork is realistic, and something I really like is all the detail on Fiona's face.

Ayla Riffel "Nails done"

8x10, acrylic paint on canvas board, 2022

My Idea for this was to show a person getting there nails done. This was my expressive painting so I decided to paint something I enjoy. My process for this wasn't very hard, I knew what I wanted to do right from the start. I like this shade of green so I painted my background that color, I then traced my hand. I was just going to do plain pink nails because that is something I would normally get but I decided that was too boring for this painting. I also added rings, shading on the hand, and then different colors for the background. I wanted this painting to stand out and not look so boring. I used paint, many different brushes, and sharpies. There is no big meaning for this artwork it's just something I enjoy. Getting the right shape of the hand and nails was definitely the hardest part. To overcome this I just had to be not so picky. The one thing I would change would be the design on the nails and do something I would actually get. I would say this is a mix between realistic and abstract. I like the background color and the shading on my fingers.

Ayla Riffel "endangered butterflies"

8x10, acrylic paint on canvas board, 2022

I knew from the start I wanted to paint an animal. I saw other artworks of butterflies and really liked them and wanted to do a painting of my own. The process wasn't hard at all, I painted the background yellow and used the paper tracer. I decided to paint an endangered species of butterflies. I want people to look at this and wonder what kind of butterfly it is. The most difficult part was deciding if I wanted to paint them or not, I did originally plan on painting them but decided to keep them plain because I liked the look better. If I could start over I would paint the background a shade of blue. This is abstract, something I really like about this painting is how clean the lines are.
