Ayla Riffel "Chip and Dip"

3x3x3, 6x6x3, Stoneware and Glass, 2022

For this Artwork my idea was to make matching bowls that would look good next to each-other. I didn't want my bowls to be to big and take up too much room on the table. I wanted them to look similar but not match so I used a grey/blue for the dip bowl and for the chip bowl I used a dark teal. Something else I did to make them not the exact same was to use different patterns/ textures on the bowls. First what I had to do was kneed my clay, I needed to get all the bubbles out of it. After that I made a slab for each bowl. Then I picked out what design I wanted on each bowl. Next I put them in bowl stencils and cut the edges but made sure they were smooth. Lastly when it was done getting fired I sanded it and glazed it and then it was done! With this art work I wanted people to see the differences in the two bowls but also that they could go together. There is no symbolism between this art work. The most difficult part for me was making sure the width of the clay was even. I would do each slab and when it was in its stencil it wouldn't be even so I would have to re do the whole thing. If I could start over I would maybe make the chip bowl a little bigger, I didn't want it too big, but it definitely could be a little bigger. I feel like this art work is realistic, I mean I can use both of these in the real world. Something I really like about it is the different patterns on the different bowls.

Ayla Riffel "Baseline and Vase"

6x6x3," 6x6x6," Stoneware and Glass, 2022

My idea for these works were both similar. I wanted them to look more modern and I wanted to actually be able to use these. The process of these were very different. For the vase I had to make a slab of clay, and then imprinted a design on it. I then had to put it over an outline for a vase and mold it together. This part was very difficult because it didn't want to stay up at first. I then had to make a bottom for it so it could actually stand up and smooth everything over. Lastly I made the handle, I made balls of clay and sticked them together for the handle and then glazed it. I really like how the colors turned out on this one. For my baseline I tried to make a jewelry holder. This was probably the easiest thing I have done so far. I grabbed some clay rolled it out fowled it up on the sides and then made a long of clay and sticked it straight up on it. I then made some 3d things and put them inside the bowl. My art work does not have any meaning. I did want the people who saw the vase to think I spent a lot of time on it though. Making the handle stay on was very difficult and making the ring holder part stick up and stay was also difficult. If I could start over I would put a little more time into making the vase just so it could have looked really good. I also wouldn't put those things on the side of my ring holder, but other than that there is not much I would change. I would also say these are realistic because I can also use both of these. I really do the like the colors I used for my vase.

"Tiger in the Forest"

We wanted to do something that involved the forest and add a pop of color. Thats why we did the tiger because of its bright orange color. I really like how this ended up turning out.

"The 2 sauce bowls"

3x3x3, 3x3x3

My idea for these was to just make two small bowls that looked like they go together but doesn't look the same. I didn't really have any inspiration for this I just wanted them to look better than my 1st set of bowls.

My processes for these bowls was the quickest. They were the one I made on the wheel so I could make them very smooth and look better. I used clay, the pottery wheel. There is no big meaning behind any of these art works, I just wanted them to look good sitting right by each other. It was really difficult doing the lip/ edges of the bowl, I had to redo the entire bowl many times so that it could look perfect. If I could change one thing it would be the color of the bowls, I think I could have made them match better and I don't really like the color. This is realistic, you can use them in your real life. Something I really like about these bowls is how smooth and shiny they look.

"Beautiful Butterfly"

For one of my paintings I did paint a butterfly and that's why I wanted to include it in ceramics too. This one I used some slabs of clay and traced out wings. I also made indents and 3D clay on top. When people look at this I want them to think it's something that they have never seen before. Thats why I used so many colors and and made sure there was a contrast. The hardest part for me was the glaze. It was really hard to do the two different colors, trying not to mix them, and not wondering what it would look like all together when it was done. Something I would change would be the size of the top wings. This is an abstract piece of work and something I do really like is all the different colors.
