Avery Speas "Grandma’s Recipe"
1x1x0.5’’, Air Dry Clay and Acrylic Paint, 2026
Once we were introduced to our first project (which was making a magnet), I immediately thought of how many are on my grandma’s fridge. I love baking with my grandma which is why I decided to make something food related. One of my favorite family recipes is our cherry pie recipe. I began to look up inspiration for how I should execute this magnet. Once I got all of the details down, I showed Mr. Garrity and then got my materials ready. I started off by making the pie crust bottom. After that, I individually rolled out little circles and placed them on the crust. This was to give the look of actual pie filling from a can of cherries. I then rolled out thin strips to cover the top of the pie. After it was fired, I painted the cherry filling deep red and the crust golden brown. To me, this magnet means a connection that I have with my grandma. I love doing things with her and I get to showcase that with this magnet. I think that when people think of pie, a lot of them think about their grandparents or just a warm kitchen with their families. I think that the hardest part was getting the color to match what I envisioned a realistic pie to be. I had to take my time and be patient so that I could make it look as realistic as I could. Eventually, I got the color to be exactly how I wanted it to be. If I started over however, I would make the filling with more large balls instead of such small ones because rolling the individual balls took a very long time. I love that I can look at it and instantly think of my grandma. I think that it is unique to me because the vast majority of my artwork displays a sentimental feeling. Sentimental artwork is my favorite to make because it makes me excited to work on art.
