Avery Speas "Breakfast Platter"
5 x 4.5 x 2, Stoneware and Glaze, 2026
My idea for this project was to make something that was not necessarily functional but rather moveable. I really wanted something that I could change depending on the day and my mood. My idea was to make a platter with a pancake, waffle, and slice of butter. This way, I could switch up which food is on the platter depending on the day. To begin the project, I made the platter. I did this by rolling out a slab, cutting out a circle, and then compressing the clay together. I then pressed a circular ring around ½ inch from the edge of the plate. After this, I moved on to the pancake. I rolled out a slab and then cut it into a smaller circle so that it would fit on the plate. I compressed the sides and then I was done with the pancake. Then, I moved on to the waffle. I rolled out a slab, cut a circle, and compressed the edges. I then began to make the waffle pattern. I made small squares until it looked realistic enough. Finally, I moved onto the butter. This was simple because I rolled out a small slab and cut out a square. After all the components were fired, I glazed the plate with a combination of blues and I glazed the pancake and waffle a brown-grey color. I glazed the butter yellow and then waited for the glaze to be fired into the clay. To me, the artwork I created means choice and freedom of expression. The waffle and pancake allow me to choose which one I like better depending on the day. There are so many combinations that can line the plate. I could have a pancake and/or waffle with or without butter! I really like how it came out despite the challenges I faced. It was hard at first to come up with an idea. I had no clue what I wanted the choice sculpture to be. I then really took what the assignment was. It was a choice sculpture. This ultimately led me to making the pancake and waffle platter. I think if I could start over, I would redo the waffle pattern to make it easier but I would also add in syrup because that is pretty iconic to have on pancakes and waffles. I think that the closest style of art this would be is realistic cause I am recreating something that is real and it doesn’t look too far off in my opinion. I think the only thing that is pretty far off is the size is much smaller than real waffles and pancakes. I love that it reminds me of weekend breakfasts as a kid. I always had pancakes and waffles so I think its a nice reminder of my childhood.
