16x20, acrylic paint, 2023
I got the idea for this painting by finding a picture of a Dr. Pepper can in my camera roll. I love Dr. Pepper so I chose to paint it. Instead of painting just a can of Dr. Pepper, I wanted it to be colorful and pop which is when I knew I should do pop art. I was inspired by Andy Warhol's paintings and tried to correlate my painting to his. For my process, I first started by putting a piece of tape vertically and horizontally through the middle to create four different squares. I then mixed paints to make the four background colors. After the paint dried I took the tape off. I printed out different pictures of a Dr. Pepper can to find which one fit on my canvas the best and using a pencil I traced it onto the four different squares. I then tried to match the can color to the background but just a lighter version and painted them. Looking at a picture, I drew on the label and painted it white. My art represents how much I like Dr. Pepper and how it's almost like an addiction. It really doesn't mean anything, I just wanted to paint a pop art painting and I chose a Dr. Pepper can for that. The most difficult part for me was to draw out and paint the Dr. Pepper logo. I wanted to try to make it look almost identical to each other but that was hard to do. I cut around the logo from a picture of a can I printed off and traced the outline so that it could be easier. If I started over I would probably switch the colors of the cans around so that it didn't match the background so that it would be more of a colorful-pop artwork. I would also take more time on the label so that it didn't look sloppy. The style of art of my painting is pop art. What makes it unique is I had four different colors and for the cans I just did a lighter shade of those backgrounds. I love how colorful it is and that it is a painting of my favorite drink.
