The Tree
8.5 x 13 inches
Cardboard, glue, paper, string
2021
I got this idea from my imagination. I thought it would be really cool to make a tree out of cardboard. I wasn’t sure how I would do it, but I wanted to figure it out. I had to bend the cardboard into tubes and make the trunk, then use paper and small pieces of cardboard to make the branches. After that, I had to cover the whole thing in paperbark, and finally make and tie the swing to a branch. I had to learn how to work with cardboard, it was definitely a challenge in the beginning. Cutting and bending it into round tubes proved to be difficult. If I had to restart my project I would do a better job applying the paper as bark and make the swing balance better. I love my tree because it reminds me of a swing I had at my grandma’s house when I was little. Another thing I like about my tree is that it looks pretty accurate to a real tree.

“The Crown”
6”x3”
Wire, beads
2021
The style of my sculpture is realism. I based it on what a real crown would look like. I got this idea because I read a lot of books with royalty in them. I looked at pictures online and based my crown on a picture I saw. I started by making the base rings that fit around my head. Then I made the small swirls that connect the base pieces. Next, I made the larger curled pieces and I used very thin bendy wire to connect it all. Finally, I added very small clear/white beads inside the smaller swirls. If I started over I would make the wire bends neater and I would apply the beads better. I love my wire crown because it is very pretty, wearable, and I think it’s quite realistic.

“Candle light”
6.5x5
Clay, glaze
2021
My sculpture is abstract, I think this because the holes in the pot are supposed to represent stars and the trees aren’t perfect, they look more abstract than realism. I had the idea to create a decorative container that could be used as a candle holder. I found a similar container in a picture online and based the shape off of that. I started with making a pinch bowl out of clay and made coils to make the inner ridge for the lid to sit on. Then I made another small pinch bowl for the lid. Next, I took my needle tool and carved the tree design, and poked small holes all around it. Lastly, I made a ball of clay to be the lids handle. After my container was fired I glazed the entire thing white and made the smaller details royal turquoise. If I started over I would make the lid a better size and shaped correctly to fit the pot. I love my project because of the colors I chose and the fact that a candle can shine its light through it.

“Flower People”
3x1, 3.5x3.5, 5x2
Clay, Glaze
2021
The style of my sculpture is surreal. They are surreal because they have the body of people with flowers for their faces. I found my inspiration for this project from a picture online. I started on the sunflower first by making the body out of chunks of clay. Then I cut the petals out of a thin slab using my needle tool. I repeated this process two more times but the petals were different shapes for each one. After my sculpture was fired I painted each of their bodies white. Next, I painted the rose red, the sunflower yellow and brown, and finally the last one blue. If I started over I would have shaped the blue flower's body better and smoothed out all of their petals more. I love my project because of the color contrast and how well all three flower people look together.
