Exploration of Film

Culver City Middle School - Grades 7 & 8

What will we learn about in film class?

In Exploration of Film we will learn about the entire process of making a film from start to finish. This process includes screenwriting, pre-production, principal photography, and post-production. We will also learn about film history, film genres, and all the various careers in film production. Lastly, we will learn editing concepts and learn to edit in iMovie (or perfect some skills if you already know it).

What films will we watch in class?

I will poll each class to see what you've already seen and give each class options, but some of the films we may watch include: Singin' in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, The Truman Show, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Napoleon Dynamite, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and excerpts from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu. All films are rated PG except for Scott Pilgrim (PG-13) however, I omit certain scenes in order for it to be PG-compliant. We will watch a total of 4-5 films in this one-semester class.

Will we make a movie in class?

YES! We will make a movie together and then you have the option of making one on your own for your final project. More info on that later in the semester.

In Exploration of Film, we watch most of the Crash Course Film History videos produced by PBS.
