This course will focus on different forms of creative writing including poetry, short stories, opinion pieces, and children’s stories. We will be responding to art, literature, music, etc and practicing ways to overcome writer’s block.

This course will be an exploration of how literature can be used as a mode of resistance against oppression. Critical thinking and discussion will be expected as students analyze the class texts.

This course is meant to be an introduction to the indigenous cultures in Canada and the United States. We will explore their history pre-colonization, as well as how the arrival of Europeans impacted the existing sovereign nations. We will investigate the literature and science of some of these groups, as well as the history of education pre and post colonization.

This course focuses on reading, writing, research, and analysis. Writing will be based on literature and research. Class time will be a combination of whole group units, individualized research, and independent projects.

This course will emphasize literature analysis, writing, and an examination of language. We will read a combination of literary fiction, popular fiction, poetry, memoir, and historical nonfiction. Writing, critical thinking, and discussions are expected to gain a deeper understanding of class texts.

Students will focus on ELA proficiencies that they need for graduation. Literature will provide the basis for discussion and writing. Possible texts include Beowulf, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Things Fall Apart, Dawn, and Frankenstein.

Students will engage in a demanding curriculum emphasizing language study, writing, and literature analysis. They will study the influence that a country or region’s history and culture have on the text and examine the universal questions that the classics raise. The literature studies will provide a base of knowledge for post-secondary study. Possible texts include The Once and Future King, Much Ado About Nothing, The Canterbury Tales, and Frankenstein. Students are responsible for summer work that must be completed for the first day of class.

Bioethics will allow students to delve into a variety of highly controversial issues in society. Students will focus on issues through the lens of current scientific research, while also focusing on societal influences in the making of ethical decisions. In examining the morality of situations, students will formulate arguments based on scientific research, paying particular attention to evidence used to support those arguments. In addition, students will include in their arguments influences that are more difficult to quantify, such as background, personal experience, and religion. Students will also study literature, investigating how authors make connections to science and civilization and how science influences culture. Possible titles for study include The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Flowers for Algernon, and The Martian. This class is geared toward juniors and seniors.
