Fifth grade students are encouraged to participate in “The Great American” Award Program. The program ties in with the fifth grade American History, social studies curriculum. This program was designed by a teacher at Mitchell Elementary School in Boulder City in 1987.
The Great American award is given to all fifth grade students who successfully complete the following requirements:
Identify the 50 states a blank map of the United States
Match the 50 states and capitals
Recite the Gettysburg Address
Recite the first and last names of the presidents of the United States in order.
Recite or sing the first verse of the National Anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner”
Recite the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States
Write the Pledge of Allegiance (in cursive with no spelling or punctuation errors)
Pass the United States citizenship test
Read and report on a biography of a great American
Students have until May 1, to complete all of the requirements. There is no set order for the requirements or the number of tries to complete each item. Students who earn the “Great American Award” will be honored in class and in an award ceremony at the end of the year.
