The general rule on the amount of homework a student should receive each night is ten minutes per grade level. That means a student in 5th grade should count on spending up to 50 minutes a night on homework, this includes students’ 20 minutes of reading. If your child is spending more than 50 minutes STOP them even if they are not done. Send me a message and I will help them at school.
I don’t assign very much homework, most homework will be finishing assignments students didn’t finish in class.
Parent involvement in homework should be kept to a minimal. Parents should
“facilitate” homework by...
Setting up a place and time for your child to complete their homework.
Encourage your child but be careful not to solve content problems for them.
Talk to your child about their homework, have them explain the steps, what knowledge they are using, or how they can improve.
Reading
5th graders should read a minimum of 20 minutes a day at home. Most of the time this reading should come from books your child chooses to read. Some nights your child's reading may include a passage that relates to what we are learning in class.
I will be conferencing with students regularly about what they are independently reading.
Planners
A planner will be provided for your student. Planners should come home nightly with your child’s homework. Please check and sign their planner when they are done with their homework including their reading minutes. Your signature tells me that your child completed their homework.
