While it is necessary to address plagiarism and other risks to academic integrity, we will use AI to advance the fundamental values of academic integrity - honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility.
Staff and students can use AI tools to fact-check by quickly cross-referencing information and claims, though they must still be critical of the output. Some flaws in AI feedback can be found in the form of hallucinations*, biases**, or misinterpretations of multi-meaning word.
*An AI hallucination is when an AI model generates a misleading or incorrect response
** Biases can be caused by data being selected that overly represents the makeup of who utilizes it most. Some groups may be over or under-
represented on the internet.
AI can adapt materials for students with different learning needs, showing respect for individual differences.
Teachers might allow the limited use of generative AI on specific assignments or parts of assignments and articulate why they do not allow its use in other assignments.
Teachers will not exclusively use technologies that claim to identify the use of generative AI in order to detect cheating and plagiarism, as their accuracy is questionable. It may be used as a resource to support academic integrity in the classroom setting. Refer to the steps for AI Detection below.
If a teacher or student uses an AI system, its use must be disclosed and explained. As part of the disclosure, students may choose to cite their use of an AI system using one of the following resources:
