708 INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL ART

Level 3  one year          1.0 credit         Grades 9-12

This course is a prerequisite for all advanced computer graphics and filmmaking courses.  It is designed to meet the needs of all students, regardless of ability.  No prior computer knowledge is required. Students will learn the aesthetic, technical and creative implementation of art in media. Emphasis will be placed on the exploration of graphic design, filmmaking techniques and animation. Units of instruction will focus on developing working knowledge in the use of computers and software applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Movie Maker, and Flash. This course fulfills the graduation requirement of one (1) credit in art or music between grades 9-12.


Photography

716 PHOTOGRAPHY

Level 3  one year          1.0 credit         Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Students must have the use of a digital camera for this course, which is designed to explore the photographic process as a method of creative visual communication.

Participants will gain an understanding that art principles and development of technical skills are necessary to communicate effectively in the medium. Students will develop techniques in studio lighting, printing, fashion photography, commercial photography, advertising, wedding photography, architecture and photojournalism.  Students will become competent in the use of Photoshop.

 

717 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY/PHOTO JOURNALISM

Level 3  one year          1.0 credit         Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: Photography.

Students must have the use of a digital SLR camera for this course which is designed for students who want to publish their photographs in local town and district publications. This course will cover camera handling, composition, lighting and shooting for the printed page and all facets of photo journalistic reporting, sports photography. Students will collaborate with the staff of our school publications.  Students will also focus on building a photography portfolio for college.  Students will continue to develop skills in Adobe Photoshop as well as other computer programs.


Computer Graphics

730 ADVANCED DIGITAL ART I

Level 3  one year          1.0 credit         Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Introduction to Digital Art.

This course expands students’ knowledge in the use of computer and software applications to create expressive original art. Emphasis will be placed on creative thinking and visual problem solving. This course will explore complex visual problems within the areas of photographic imaging, graphic design and web-page design. A continuous study of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustration, Google Sketch-Up and Flash will be integrated. The introduction of new software will include Illustrator (vector Illustration) and Dreamweaver (web-page development). Students will create various aspects of designs such as advertisements and design corporate identity, editorial design, book design, web-page design, package design, etc. In depth study of these processes aid in understanding how their integration leads to the production of industry standard products.

 

 731 ADVANCED DIGITAL ART II

Level 3  one year          1.0 credit         Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: Advanced Digital Art I and Introduction to Digital Art.

This course is for students seeking a higher level of independence, skill, and knowledge in the field of graphic design, animation, web-page design and silk-screening. The multimedia style curriculum enables students to develop into their areas of interest. Self-discipline and a willingness to seek new challenges are expected. Students will conference with the teacher to establish what projects will be completed. Students will integrate their advanced knowledge of software with creative thinking skills to produce finished designs and professional presentation methods, to achieve competitive college portfolio samples. This class is for the student who is considering some aspect of multimedia as a career.

 

732 ADVANCED DIGITAL ART III

Level 2  one year          1.0 credit         Grade 12

Prerequisite: Advanced Digital Art II, Advanced Digital Art I, and Introduction to Digital Art.

The final class in succession to the previous three, this class is intended for students who are pursuing a career in the field of Graphic Design.  Self-discipline and a willingness to seek new challenges are expected.  Emphasis is placed on the independence of students and their work.  Based on a variety of multi-medial curriculum students will develop, design, and execute a multi-media portfolio for college while adhering to the New York State Standards of the Visual Arts. 

Film Making

728 FILM MAKING I

Level 3  one year          1.0 credit         Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Studio in Media.

This class will introduce you to the basics of film production, narrative style editing, performance and sound. It will also expose you to a variety of films produced in the United States. At the end of class each student will have written, produced and directed their own film.

 

734 FILM MAKING II

Level 3  one year          1.0 credit         Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: Filmmaking I.

Students will explore and expand upon the knowledge base created from Filmmaking I.  Students will adventure into different programs such as Adobe SoundBooth, Adobe AfterEffects and green screen applications.  At the end of this course the student should have a well-constructed film for either their portfolio and/or student film festivals.

 

735 FILM MAKING III

Level 2  one year          1.0 credit         Grade 12

Prerequisite:  Filmmaking II.

This course is a portfolio development course.  The student will have to define himself or herself as a filmmaker and prepare a show reel for prospective colleges and/or the professional world.


148 & 775 BROADCAST JOURNALISM 

Level 3 one year 2.0 credits (1.0 ELA & 1.0 Art) Grades 10-12 

Prerequisite: Strongly encourage students to have an 80+ final course average in English 9 or English 10 and successful completion of Introduction to Digital Art 

In this full year, double-period course, students will study the principles of writing and producing news for daily announcements and other school-related activities. The basics of television news and broadcast style will be discussed and practiced. Students will develop informational, persuasive and narrative writing skills, expressive and interactive language skills, and digital editing expertise. 

*This course is also offered as a one period course earning 1.0 Credit (0.5 ELA & 0.5 Art). Students interested in taking this as a 1 period course should use course numbers 149 & 776.
