Welcome Letter from the IB Coordinator

Welcome to the Midlothian High School International Baccalaureate website! Here, current students and teachers will find resources, announcements, and updates, while prospective students and their families will find answers to frequently asked questions as well as some information about the program and its mission.

In our world of constant change, schools often struggle to prepare students for their future careers. Often, the careers students end up choosing did not exist ten years before. Organizations such as the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and the World Economic Forum have identified key skills necessary for success in a constantly evolving job market, including collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Rather than specializing in specific skills, students are best served focusing on those skills that are critical for success in all competitive job fields--including those that may not exist yet.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, with its focus on the IB Learner Profile and the IB Approaches to Teaching and Learning, is perfectly suited to prepare students for any future they choose. Every IB course embeds collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, self-management, and research skills. The IB Diploma Programme is much more than a specialty program. It is an approach to education that seeks to develop well-rounded people who are successful and happy in and out of the classroom.

The IB Learner Profile: Interested in the IB programme?

This is a list of traits the program strives to develop in its learners:

Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers

Communicators Principled Open-minded

Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective

If these are traits you possess, or ones you value in education, you may want to consider applying to Midlothian High School's IB Diploma Programme. The Chesterfield County Specialty Program Fair will be held in early to mid-October and will give potential candidates an opportunity to ask questions about the program. Our IB Open House (in the fall) will provide a more detailed look into IB, and a chance to speak with students, teachers, and parents in the program. For more information on these events, visit our 'Admissions' page.

Parents and students should be aware that, while college bound student has the potential to be successful in the IB Diploma Programme, it is not for everyone. Students who are open-minded and interested in exploring topics in depth are typically successful in the program. The program is both rewarding and rigorous and requires students to demonstrate desire and self-discipline to earn the honor of an IB Diploma. If these traits describe you, we look forward to seeing you at our open house and hope you will consider joining the IB Diploma Programme at Midlo!

Sincerely,

Stuart Jones
