Principal's Welcome Letter
Dear Prospective Students and Parents,
Welcome to Midlothian High School! We thank you for your interest in the International Baccalaureate Programme.
Your interest in this programme speaks to your desire to enroll in a high quality, internationally recognized course of study that prepares students for whatever major field of study they may choose at the university level. The International Baccalaureate diploma programme offers students both depth and breadth in a rigorous, liberal arts education that incorporates six disciplinary areas, with a focus on the inter-relatedness and global connections of each discipline. Students complete a two-year course of study in English, foreign language, individuals and societies, experimental sciences, mathematics and electives. In addition to academic studies, students prepare and carry out a “Community Activity Service” (CAS) project, study the course Theory of Knowledge, and complete an extended essay with a focus on one of the six disciplines they’ve studied during their junior and senior years.
As the International Baccalaureate Organization stresses, learners strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the IB programme is the fact that all of these learner characteristics are woven throughout every course and activity the IB programme offers.
Many universities acknowledge that IB diploma recipients are among the best prepared for university study, and our graduates consistently tell us they have been very pleased with the preparation they’ve received at Midlothian.
On a personal level, I have worked with the IB programme for over 15 years. I have witnessed the growth of the programme at Midlothian High School, gained a new perspective at Meadowbrook High School, and returned to Midlothian High School, where one of our goals is to increase the level of awareness and participation in the IB programme.
I am excited to work with a team of very talented and committed teachers, diligent students, and caring, involved families. Students at Midlothian High School never cease to amaze me with their talent, creativity, energy, and potential!
