Financial Aid and Scholarships

FAfsA Information

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first step to obtaining scholarships and federal aid for college. For almost every student, there is some need to obtain some form of financial assistance for college. Understanding when and how to apply is important to ensuring you get as much money as possible!

When can I Start Applying?

The application for the 2020-2021 will open on October 1, 2019!

Important Financial Aid Terms

  1. Scholarships: Awarded by schools, colleges, community organizations, and other entities, this form of aid is often determined by merit and does not need to be paid back.
  2. Grants: Can be based off of merit/need often from states and federal sources, does not have to be paid back.
  3. Federal Loans: Often referred to as subsidized and unsubsidized loans, these scholarships are provided by the Federal government to help students pay for college. Must be paid back.
  4. PERKINS Loans: Federal loans often with low interest rates, must show exceptional financial need and must be paid back.
  5. Private Loans: Loans obtained from private financial institutions, often have higher interest rates and must be paid back.
  6. Work Study: Provides part time employment for students who qualify.
