Leonard Daniel Kelley was one of ten children of Samuel Kelley and Mattie Leneave. He was born December 26, 1916 in Crewe, Virginia. Leonard Daniel Kelley grew up in Crewe with his parents and siblings; and the house is still there. Sarah Winston Kelley, Donna Elizabeth Kelley, Barbara Lee Kelley, Zaida Abbitt Kelley, Kate Irene Kelley, Emma Frances Kelley, Leonard Daniel Kelley, Mattie Christine Kelley, Samuel Lawson Kelley jr. and Charles Hancock Kelley were all children of the Kelley family. Before the War, Leonard worked in the railroad industry. He was a yard mechanic, until he eventually volunteered to fight in World War II along with his brother Charles.
Florence Kelley, the wife of Leonard, was a dental assistant during the war. Her mother would sell pies for 10 cents at drug stores, this would make her considered to be the "town caterer". Only four of Florence's brothers were in the war to begin with. They all had jobs in different places, some of them worked at Camp Pickett (Camp Barfoot) which was in Blackstone. The rest of her brothers worked at drugstores. Florence's grandpa worked at shoe stores and did modeling, and her brother was on the tobacco market. The other part of her family that wasn't in the war did administrative work. Several of her siblings also didn't end up having kids. Delle Curry, Florence's niece, had a good relationship with most of her aunts and uncles, they were some of the few siblings Florence had that still lived nearby, others lived in Richmond or other places that their jobs took them.
After World War Two, Leonard lived a simple, and peaceful life. He had an Honorable Discharge at first but joined back three times after which ended his military life. But his service as a working civilian had not stopped as he rejoined in the railroad business for his final job after WWII. Florence and Leonard met at a dance in Crewe which was where Leonard lived. He and Florence had married after the war on December 25th, 1954. Now isn't that just a very, merry Christmas? Speaking of Florence, after they married, they moved to Blackstone, Virginia together. As a married couple they tried to have children but because of infertility issues, they never did. So, they spoiled their niece and nephew while retired. This basically made their niece and nephew like children. But after his prestigious life;he passed away most likely in a hospital located in Chesterfield. However, we still do not know how Florence passed.
