Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I write my own speeches?

That is up to you! Depending on the event you are placed in. In Limited Prep and in Public Address Events you typically will write a speech.

Does Speech meet every day?

Nope! Speech is a flexible club that gives you a lot of say in when you meet to practice your pieces with your coach, individually, and with your event groups.

A committed speech team member can bank on spending at least 2 hours a week at school for speech.

How long should my speech/piece be?

Some events require different times than others.

  • Limited Prep:

    • Extemp: 7 Minutes

    • Impromptu: 6 Minutes

    • Radio: 5 Minutes

  • Performative Events: Typically between 8-8:30 minutes

  • Public Address: Typically between 8-8:30 minutes

What do I do if I don't have a suit or the 'proper' clothes for speech tournaments?

There is a small budget for helping students purchase a suit for the season. Speak to one of the coaches to find out if you are eligible.

One requirement is that a student must compete for the entire season.

I don't know anyone on the team; should I still audition?

Absolutely! Speech is a club where you will make new friends and become part of a community.
