The Intro Band is a vibrant ensemble of musicians who are just starting their musical journey. Comprised of students in their first year of playing an instrument, this group is all about exploration, growth, and fun. With a focus on building foundational skills and developing musicality, the Intro Band will perform repertoire from classical to pop, and everything in between. With guidance from current button band members and modeled instruction from the band director, the students will learning to work together, follow direction, and master not one, but two or more instruments. Music Appreciation involves developing an ear for different genres, styles, and historical periods, as well as gaining insight into the cultural and social contexts in which music was created. Music appreciation encompasses various aspects, including:
- Recognizing musical elements like melody, harmony, rhythm, and form
- Identifying instruments, voices, and ensembles
- Exploring musical genres, such as classical, jazz, rock, and pop
- Understanding music history and its evolution over time
- Analyzing musical structure and composition techniques
- Appreciating the emotional and expressive qualities of music
- Developing a personal connection to music and its significance in our lives
By cultivating music appreciation, through reading as well as performing on instruments, one can deepen their enjoyment and understanding of music, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the art form. As an added bonus, music appreciation students may also get involved in performing for music ministry, the guitar ensemble, or the band program.
Central Catholic's first ever guitar class and ensemble! This is where you will learn to strum, pluck, and jam your way to musical mastery on the most popular instrument in today's world! In this interactive and engaging class, students will learn the fundamentals of guitar playing, including:
- Chord progressions and finger placement
- Strumming patterns and techniques
- Basic music theory and notation
- Styles and genres, from rock to blues to folk to classical
- Tips for practice and performance
- Display developed skills by perform for Christmas and Spring Concerts
- Cultivate talents to other groups such as music ministry and band
Our experienced instructor, Mr. Gutierrez, will guide you through group lessons, individualized feedback, and hands-on practice. The Advanced Band is a prestigious ensemble comprised of highly skilled musicians who have honed their craft through dedication and hard work. This premier group pushes the boundaries of musical excellence, performing complex and challenging repertoire from various genres, including classical, jazz, and contemporary. With a focus on precision, nuance, and artistry, the Advanced Band showcases exceptional technique, tone, and interpretation. There are participation and class assignment grades as well as performances that count as exam grades. All band students are expected to participate in all performances this year.
Under the guidance of the band director these talented musicians refine their skills in:
- Advanced instrumental techniques
- Sophisticated musicality and phrasing
- Ensemble cohesion and balance
- Sight-reading and improvisation
- Performance and presentation
- Ongoing practice of leadership

The Afterschool Band Program is an opportunity designed for students who want to get involved in band after school. This program provides a supportive and challenging environment for students to develop their musical talents, build confidence, and foster a lifelong appreciation for music.
In our afterschool band program, students will participate with the members of the Mighty Button band to practice repertoire for events and competitions.
Note: Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, private instruction outside the campus is necessary.
The rehearsals are fast paced and follows up from the instruction given in the band classes. On most occasions, the band will divide and conquer into sectionals to further instruct newcomers and beginners on how to read and play the music effectively. It is expected that all Afterschool Band members:
- Read, understand, and sign the Acknowledge receipt of the Band Handbook
- Participate in ALL performances with the Mighty Button Band
- Learn advanced techniques and repertoire inside and outside campus
- Develop teamwork and collaboration skills with all members of the band and booster club
- Develop quality sound on their instrument
- Have access to instrument rentals and equipment
Once again, our program is designed for students of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Students may get involved in more than one ensemble such as jazz band, drumline, and music ministry.
