Year 7 – The cost of living and staying healthy

This Lesson:

• Understand what the cost of living is and what inflation means

• Explore real-life examples of rising costs and how they affect daily life

• Identify the impacts of the cost of living crisis on people (eg. stress, spending choices)

• Explain why people may choose cheaper, less healthy food options

• Learn the difference between unprocessed, processed, and ultra-processed foods

• Examine the benefits and drawbacks of ultra-processed foods (health, cost, convenience, environment)

• Understand what makes a diet healthy, affordable, and sustainable

• Apply knowledge by creating a balanced, budget-friendly lunch

Year 8 – The rule of law and knife crime

This Lesson:

• Understand what the rule of law means and why it is important in society

• Learn how laws are made in the UK (eg. Parliament and the role of government)

• Explore how the justice system works, including police, courts, and sentencing

• Identify laws that affect young people, including those related to weapons and safety

• Understand the legal consequences of carrying a knife (eg. arrest, criminal record, prison)

• Examine the personal impacts of crime, including effects on victims, families, and communities

• Explore the causes of knife crime (eg. peer pressure, fear, environment, media influence)

• Recognise warning signs and how to stay safe, making informed and responsible decisions

Year 9 – How Our Choices Impact Nature, Food, and the Planet

This Lesson:

• Understand what ecosystems are and how living things depend on each other

• Explain biodiversity and why it is important for a healthy planet

• Explore how ecosystems support human wellbeing (food, clean air, water, mental health)

• Identify how human actions (eg. pollution, deforestation, consumption) impact nature

• Examine the impact of food choices on the environment (eg. plant-based vs high-impact diets)

• Understand the role of waste and recycling, including the effects of food waste

• Compare different lifestyle choices in terms of cost, convenience, and sustainability

• Make informed, realistic decisions about how to reduce environmental impact

Year 10 –  Understanding Taxes and How Society is Funded

This lesson:

• Understand what tax is and why it is collected by governments

• Identify different types of tax in the United Kingdom (eg. income tax, National Insurance, VAT, council tax)

• Explain how tax is used to fund public services (eg. healthcare, education, emergency services)

• Explore how income tax and thresholds work, including the idea of tax-free allowance

• Interpret basic payslips, including gross pay, deductions, and net (take-home) pay

• Calculate simple examples of how tax affects earnings and take-home pay

• Understand the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion

• Evaluate the impact of not paying tax on society, including fairness and funding of services

KS3 Mandarin Study Day (Y7 & Y8 Non MEP students)

Dear parents/guardians,

We are delighted to inform you that Christ’s College Finchley is organising a one-day school visit to the British Film Institute, Southbank, for the educational event “Family, culture and modernity in Chinese cinema”.  You can find more information in the letter.

Reminder: Cancelled Event

Due to unforseen circumstances the PFA have had to cancel the Music Bingo scheduled for today, Friday 24th April.

Their next event will be Friday 5th June 2026, more details will follow shortly.

Year 8 HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine

The School Aged Immunisation Team will be coming into your child's school on 01/05/2025 and 12/06/2026 to administer the HPV vaccine to girls and boys in Year 8. 

Please use the link below to register your consent for your child to receive the vaccine, please complete this whether you want your child to have the vaccine or do not consent.  When completing the form, please ensure that you make absolutely sure that you have entered the correct school as there are a lot of schools in the Barnet area with the same or similar names.

This is a very important vaccine and is part of your child's routine childhood vaccinations.  It protects against 9 strains of the Human Papillomavirus and prevents against certain types of Cancer.

Your child's school will mostly have two dates booked unless it is a very small school.   If your child misses their vaccine at the first session due to illness or absence, please do not complete a second consent form, the original consent form will still be valid.
