Explain the limitations of models of the solar system.
This video is a great summary of how to tell the difference between stars and planets.
Students should understand that planets look like stars from Earth.
However, it is because of the reflection of the sun (our star) that we see planets and that they appear brighter than stars.
Planets are closer to Earth than other stars.
Planets can be observed moving around the sun.
Constellation project:
Students will need to make up their own constellation after we preview the powerpoint on stars and constellations.
I will be reading a book on constellations to get the students thinking about ideas. I will share some of the examples from previous years.
The students will pick something that may or may not be important to them and draw the constellation.
The story should include the following:
How many stars it is made up of (important star(s) that may be part of it ex. north star)
How or why it was made into a constellation, please explain its importance.
a picture of the constellation on black construction provided and white color pencil or crayon to draw with.
