Mythology

In a very real way, this course is a study of human culture and our common humanity. Every ancient culture created myths that have been passed to us in disorganized and broken pieces. Largely, modernity either relegates mythology to interesting trivia (Did you know that the Egyptian god Horus represents the sky and war!) or meaningless stories from humanity's ignorant past (Can you believe that people actually believed volcanoes were caused by fierce giants wrestling?)

It is our hope that this class will help to remove mythology from these two impotent categories. To this end, we will explore the function of myths within society, the moral and ethical implications of mythology, the use of mythology in modern culture and art, and the commonalities between modern storytelling and ancient myths.
