Northern Ireland Schools Volleyball tournaments have some local rules that are additions to the standard rules of volleyball.
Players at U16 level and below are not allowed to contact the ball with any part of their body below the waist.
Players at any level are permitted to head the ball in exceptional circumstances. Continued heading of the ball that goes against the spirit of the game will be called as a fault.
Some rules that sometimes get overlooked by coaches, but still apply at schools level:
Each player must serve in turn.
A substituted player may only return to court in place of the player that replaced them.
4-a-side - players must rotate in clockwise direction when the serve is won back from the opposition, so each player serves in turn
Court size: Badminton Court
Net height: Between 1.80m and 2.15m (Schools Height) depending on the age of the players
6-a-side
Court size: 18m x 9m (full size volleyball court)
Net height: 2.24m (Womens Height)
6-a-side
Court Size: 18m x 9m (full size volleyball court)
Girls Net height: 2.24m (Womens Height)
Boys Net Height: 2.43m (Mens Height)
Players who are new to volleyball often attack the net in a dangerous way.
Whether hitting or blocking, players should be aware that any touch of the net, or contact with the net is an immediate point to the other team.
Going through, or under the net is dangerous and players should be warned in advance of playing and again if they transgress. Repeated faults of this kind should not be tolerated.
