Goal and global context

Goal

The goal of the project is the following: “To inform members of the CCB 10th grade academic environment (Teachers, Students and Parents) about how to improve the curriculum” Currently in Colombia there is a severe issue, the scholar system has not been updated in over 50 years and the subjects that are being taught are not fully meeting the student’s needs and requirements for being successful in a laboral environment. There is a disconnection between the three parties involved in the academic environment, parents, teachers and students. Consequently, the goal is to reunite the three parties in an informative web page which will make them realize what needs to be improved and provide them with a space to share ideas, solutions and take action

MOTIVATION

Many factors impulsed me to choose the topic of education, among them: my desire to learn helpful aspects useful for life, not only what I was being taught at school. I believe that I finally decided to make my personal project about education and the critical things we should all learn in life to be successful with a personal anecdote: I saw one of my classmates struggling in an area that I found really easy (oratory) because i've had previous experience in the United Nations Model. He had great ideas, the problem was that he couldn't express them. At this point, I thought that this was unacceptable, I couldn't believe that someone could struggle to communicate their ideas in public. I said to myself “this is something that the school should teach us, as it is imperative to succeed in life” and asked myself “why is this not being taught to us?” This is when I started my research for more concepts and abilities that the school is not teaching us and we MUST LEARN.

GLOBAL CONTEXT

The topic I am working on is perfectly related to the Scientific and Technical Innovation global context, more specifically, Human Capability and Development Sub-group. An element critical for scientific and technical innovation is the development of curriculum because it is the foundations for education and the concepts that are being taught have to be adapted to the needs of the students, as well as being constantly updated and evolving. There should not be a “one fits all curriculum” as it is done currently in many institutions, it should adapt to the needs of the students and the context in which they live in; thus, every country should have its own unique curriculum which aims to educate students in areas that are relevant to their own situation, with the purpose of equipping them with the necessary knowledge to contribute to the country's needs as well as their own, this directly affects the technology, advances and the economic growth of the country.
