We believe
Under the consecrated species of bread and wine, Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real and substantial manner.
Catechism of the Catholic Church #1415
I am the living bread...Whoever eats this bread will live forever…
Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have live because of me.
John 6:51,57
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in them.
John 6:53-54, 56
The response of many of the listeners is utter disbelief. Some of Jesus’ disciples turn away and leave him. This is perhaps the strongest testimony to the literal fact of the Real Presence.
Faced with doubt, disbelief, and outright rejection, Jesus might have reworded it. Rather than do that, Jesus doubles down on his message, declaring: “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” Then, determined to have no doubters among his followers, he turns to the Apostles and asks them, “Will you also go away?”

Regarding the temporal consequences, Paul writes, “That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died” (1 Cor. 11:30). Why would Paul believe that sickness, death, and damnation result from an unworthy reception of the Eucharist if it were merely a symbol? Such consequences are unintelligible if the Eucharist is a mere symbol.
