Some institutions require that you first submit you FAFSA (Federal Financial Aid form) to be considered for scholarships.
Turn in applications on time! If they are being mailed make sure you mail them about a week ahead of time. If you are not sure if they are due back to Mrs. Malmquist or being mailed just ask.
Give your recommenders at least 2 weeks to write your letters and give them an idea of what the scholarship is about.

NC State University’s scholarship application portal for Undergraduate, Agricultural Institute and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students. New students may apply upon admission. Apply by February 15 for priority consideration.
The State of North Carolina established the NC Promise Tuition Plan to increase access to a quality university education by reducing student costs. Undergraduate students at four UNC System campuses, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and Western Carolina University, pay only $500 for in-state tuition and $2,500 for out-of-state tuition each fall and spring semester. NextGen offers scholarships for training for in-demand jobs in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties. Training opportunities could include short term or long-term training (up to 2 years). The purpose is to develop a talent pipeline for job opportunities in our area. LA Tutors awards students who showcase their creativity and make positive impacts with a $500 Innovation in Education scholarship. On an ongoing monthly basis, this scholarship is open to all currently enrolled high school and college students who showcase their creativity while helping those around them (whether that be in a creative fundraiser, inventive new app, series of blog posts on a particular theme, or another idea). The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to students in their final year of high school. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship. This four-year scholarship is estimated at over $124,000 for students wanting to engage deeply in their communities and excel in their studies at UNC-Charlotte. The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship is offered by the UNC Chapel Hill’s Creative Writing Program and Department of English. The Scholarship program offers full four-year funding for tuition, room and board, textbooks, and a new laptop, along with a $5,000 annual summer stipend to support the recipient's creative work. The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship’s level of support is comparable to that of the University’s well-known Morehead Scholarships. Thomas Wolfe Scholarship seeks to identify and reward students with exceptionally focused literary ability and promise. The Robertson Scholars Program is a unique opportunity to earn financial benefits as well as leadership experience, summer programs, mentorship, and community from both UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University. The Park Scholarships program focuses on and encourages students to seek their potential in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The NC Home Builders Association Educational & Charitable Foundation is thrilled to once again offer at least eight $1,000 Workforce Development Regional Scholarships to high school seniors pursuing careers in the residential construction industry! This scholarship is dedicated to honoring the legacy of a beloved St. Stephens' coach who prioritized building character over simply winning games. Coach Frye's scholarship celebrates his enduring legacy of integrity, mentorship, and dedication to shaping good people. A student-athlete, who has participated in baseball or men's or women's basketball, will receive $500-$1000 to the 2- or 4-year college/university they plan to attend. This scholarship honors William Alden Elliott, who was one of the law enforcement officers tragically killed in Charlotte, April 2024. This $2,000 (one male and one female recipient) will be awarded to a graduating senior who will be attending a community college, university, or technical school in the fall of 2025. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, be a senior in Catawba County Schools or Newton-Conover Schools, participate in extracurricular activities, demonstrate a positive attitude, initiative, honor, loyalty, respect and leadership ability. In memory of Chris Eckard (SSHS class of 1998) and his service in the United States Armed Forces, the Chris Eckard Scholarship is awarded to a student who is a child or grandchild of someone who has served in the US Armed Forces. The renewable award is at least $750 and is given to students who have at least a 3.0 GPA, has proven leadership abilities, and is a participant in church and community service activities. The Hickory Kiwanis Foundation offers a $1000, one time scholarship in honor of Zara Baker. This scholarship is awarded to students who have overcome physical or mental trials and issues. The CCAEOP Scholarship will be awarded to one student in the amount of a $1,500 scholarship. The recipient of this award has the opportunity to then be awarded scholarships at the District and State levels. Applicants must be US citizens, a graduating senior, and be admitted to a two or four-year program. The Hickory Kiwanis Foundation is pleased to present the Hickory Kiwanis Scholarship awarded at $3000. This scholarship is renewable for four years to high school seniors who are pursuing further education. Students must have a 2.0 GPA, have substantial financial need (no more than $65,000 household income) and exhibit good moral character. The Jay Benton Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Jay Benton who was a proud St Stephens High School graduate, from the class of 1989. The scholarship will be awarded to one deserving senior, in the amount of $2,500 (renewable for four years). Applicants must be attending a 2- or 4-year university and pursuing a career in a service industry (i.e. firefighter, counselor, nurse, first responder, police officer, social worker, or teacher). The Mark Story Teacher Scholarship is focused on high school seniors who have a desire to teach, ultimately in Catawba County Schools. The Rotary Club of Catawba County is offering the Glenn Barger Scholarship. This $2,500 scholarship is in memory of Mr. Barger, a former educator, administrator and superintendent in Catawba County Schools. The Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo is offering 10 $2,500 scholarships to students who are pursuing education after high school. Applicants will be selected based on grades, school and community involvement, SAT or ACT scores, as well as an essay, billboard, brochure, or TikTok video encouraging fellow teens to abstain from underage drinking and driving, and two letters of recommendation. The Crown Him Educational Grant will be awarded to one Catawba County Schools senior, a born-again Christian called to the ministry of serving the Kingdom of God. The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship. The scholarship provides an award up to $7,500 each semester for up to eight consecutive semesters ($60,000 total scholarship potential). The SECU Foundation People Helping People Scholarship is a $10,000 award, only available to graduating public high school seniors who are either current members of State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) or the child of a parent/guardian who is a member of SECU at the time of application. Students need to exemplify the "People Helping People" philosophy, demonstrating leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Applicants must be accepted to one of the 16 constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina System; (copy of acceptance letter must be provided). The Catawba County Retired School Personnel is offering a $1,000 scholarship (that is renewable) to students who are seeking higher education and a career in education. The Mary Doctor Fine Arts Scholarship Committee annually selects one or two students to receive scholarships of up to $10,000 each. Scholarships are awarded for one year but may be renewed for up to three years. The Education Foundation of Catawba County Schools is offering the Catawba County Association of Teacher Assistants Scholarship. The award will be between $500-$1500, and will be awarded to a high school senior who is the child of a CCS Teacher Assistant or the child of another classified position (i.e. bus driver, custodia, cafeteria worker, maintenance, etc.). ECU’s Global Fellows program is a new initiative of the Office of Global Affairs designed to position high achieving students for success in today’s global, multicultural economy. This is for incoming first year students. In addition to a $1,500 scholarship towards a credit bearing study abroad program, ECU Global Fellows are offered an opportunity to participate in a number of special activities that will prepare you academically and enhance your professional resume. The Patrick Beaver Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships to high school students who demonstrate an A/B average, extraordinary character, are focused on an enriching school experience and achieving expected educational and extracurricular goals. The Foundation plans to award four scholarships this year, in the amount of $1,500 for eight semesters. Legacy Awards are $4,000 scholarships available to children and grandchildren of Elks members. For the 2025 contest, any child or grandchild (or step-child, step-grandchild, or legal ward) of a living Elk who joined the order on or before April 1, 2022, or a charter member of a Lodge that was instituted on or after April 1, 2022, is eligible to apply. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) offers 26 national scholarships for graduating high school seniors, and college, graduate and medical students. Awards are given up to $5,000 for various scholarships. All applications are available online through this website.

DEADLINE: Essay due January 17th
9th through 12th graders are eligible to submit essay entries for the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest. Award recipients have the opportunity to win awards valued between $100-$10,000! Essays must be between 700 and 1,000 words and must describe an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year John F. Kennedy was born. 12th grade Senior Beta members are eligible to apply for a National Beta Scholarship. Selection of National Beta Scholarship winners is based on a number of factors, with an emphasis on academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, commendable character, school and community service, as well as participation in National Beta Club activities. Students planning careers in government service are encouraged to apply for the Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship. Each interested student is invited to write a one-page essay stating why he or she plans a career in government service including any inspiration to be derived from the leadership of George Washington in his famous crossing of the Delaware. In addition, students must also have a recommendation from their high school principal or counselor. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000. For further instructions, visit this site.

The Horatio Alger Association awards college scholarships to deserving students who have faced adversity. Scholarships range from $10,000 to $25,000.
