The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to exceptional student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential.

Selected Scholars will receive funding for the full cost of attendance to earn a bachelor’s degree, that is not already covered by other financial aid and the Student Aid Index, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or the methodology used by a Scholar’s college or university. Costs covered include tuition, fees, books, housing and food, and may include additional personal costs. TGS also provides Scholars with various online support services designed to help them excel in their degree programs, graduate, and make a successful transition to their chosen careers. These include career services, mentoring, leadership development, wellness, and knowledge building.

• Pell-Eligible

• A US Citizen or permanent resident 

• In good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)

• A student must plan to enroll full-time, in a four-year degree program, at a US accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university. 

Ideal Candidates will have: 

• An outstanding academic record in high school (in the top 10% of his/her graduating class)

• Demonstrated leadership ability (e.g., as shown through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities)

• Exceptional personal success skills (e.g., emotional maturity, motivation, perseverance, etc.)

The "Be Bold" Scholarship is a no-essay scholarship that will be awarded to the applicant with the boldest profile. It takes less than 2 minutes to apply. To us, boldest does not mean "best", or "most accomplished". Being bold means being:

The $25,000 scholarship will be awarded to the student whose profile is most bold, according to these characteristics. Furthermore, the scholarship will be unique in that it will favor students who apply earlier- who are bold and seize the day without procrastinating.

The Levine Scholars Program at UNC Charlotte recruits and empowers high achieving, service-driven leaders, equipping them to forge legaciues of local impact and globla engagement. The award provides Levine Scholars with full-tuition, housing, meals, and madatory fees for all four years. Funding is also provided for four distinctive summer experiences that will develop leadership skills, social awareness, and a global perspective. All scholars also have access to a grant to implement a service or outreach project in partnership with a local nonprofit. The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship is offered by the UNC Chapel Hill’s Creative Writing Program and Department of English. The Jefferson Scholarship is the premier undergraduate scholarship at The University of Virginia. Out of state students have the opportunity to be awarded $83,000 per year or upwards of $405,000 total. The Johnson Scholarship is Washington and Lee University’s premier merit-based scholarship. It recognizes students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, integrity, and the potential to contribute to the intellectual and civic life of the W&L community. Up to 44 incoming first-year students receive the scholarship each year.

Award: The Johnson Scholarship covers tuition and fees, housing and food, plus $10,000 in funding for a summer experience such as research, travel, or an internship. The award is valued at more than $89,000 per year.

The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship. The North Carolina State Elks Association offers a $1,000 one-year scholarship to North Carolina high school seniors who plan to pursue nursing. Preference is recommended for students who are in the top 25% of their class and actively involved in nursing-related activities.

The Equitable Excellence Scholarship Program supports students from across the country who strive to be a force for good in their communities. By pursuing a postsecondary degree, these students show fortitude and resilience, and plan to inspire others in their community to pursue higher education. 

This year scholarship recipients will receive a $5,000 renewable scholarship for up to four years of their undergraduate study, for a total of $20,000 in financial support. Scholarship recipients also receive special access to workshops centered around financial wellness, mental wellness and critical professional leadership and development sessions tailored to support resume building and personal branding. Further, recipients will be connected with mentors and access to personal guidance throughout their postsecondary journeys. Through peer-to-peer mentorship, previous Equitable Excellence winners will help guide the new cohort through their first year of school as they navigate academic and personal growth.

The Lyceum Scholars Program awards $60,000 scholarships disbursed over four years to incoming first year students at Clemson University. As a Lyceum Scholar, you will take eight courses as a cohort and graduate with a minor in Political Science. A former Negro Leagues baseball player, Burton excelled on the diamond and in the community. As a 16-year-old in 1947, he began playing in the Negro Leagues with the Harrisburg Giants. For Burton and many others, that year proved to be monumental as Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier on April 15. Over the years, Burton played with many baseball greats, including Hall-of-Famers Leroy “Satchel” Paige, Minnie Minoso, and Buck O’Neal. In 1954, Burton’s Giants won the Eastern Negro League championship. While Burton certainly made a name for himself on the baseball field, he was also a trailblazer in the Civil Rights Movement, becoming the first black president of the District 91 Machinist Union.

The Captain Bradley Long Memorial Fund is offering two $1,000 scholarships annually to volunteer first responders in Catawba County that are pursuing their career at a two or four-year institution studying the curriculum of Fire Science, EMT, or Paramedics. The Jay Benton Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Jay Benton who was a proud St Stephens High School graduate, from the class of 1989. The scholarship will be awarded to one deserving senior, in the amount of $2,500 (renewable for four years). Applicants must be attending a 2- or 4-year university and pursuing a career in a service industry (i.e. firefighter, counselor, nurse, first responder, police officer, social worker, or teacher). Webb A. Murray was a distinguished member of our community and the schools in the St. Stephens area. He had an unrelenting passion for education and helping young people, giving them the chance to have bright futures. To recognize his legacy, SSHS offers the Murray Teaching Scholarship. This is an opportunity for students who want to pursue studying and working in the education field. There is an award of $1,500 minimum for those interested in working with children.
