Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 9-Week course will help students build core personal finance skills and learn real-world strategies to effectively manage their personal finances. Topics include decision making, budgeting, saving, consumer skills, preparing for high school and more.


LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students will have a basic understanding of personal finance topics and a foundation in the skills necessary to successfully navigate the financial responsibilities that exist in life.


UNIT CALENDAR

UNIT 1: Behavioral Economics

Learn about decision making, trade offs, and the importance of setting goals

UNIT 2: Consumer Skills

Learn banking basics and smart consumer skills like understanding advertising and comparison shopping

UNIT 3: Budgeting

Learn how to distinguish between needs and wants and how to budget for both

UNIT 4: Credit

Learn about responsible borrowing habits with loans and credit cards

UNIT 5: Saving

Learn about the importance of saving and how to build strong saving habits

UNIT 6: Investing

Learn about the basics of stocks and bonds and core investing strategies such as diversifying risk

UNIT 7: Protecting Yourself

Learn about digital citizenship, how to avoid scams, and the importance of insurance

UNIT 8: Prepare for Success

Learn about soft skills, resumes, and how to make the most of high school

UNIT 9: Life After High School

Learn how to plan for college or other alternatives and explore different career paths


GRADING & ASSESSMENTS

Students will be assessed using daily exit tickets, class activities as well as end of unit quizzes. There will be a start of course diagnostic exam and an end of course final exam.

Class time will be given to complete most assignments. Late work will be accepted with a 10% point deduction for each day late up to a maximum of 50%.


TECHNOLOGY & REQUIRED MATERIALS

All assignments will be distributed through Google Classroom. Students should come to class with a charged chromebook, pencil and earbuds everyday. There is not a textbook for this class. All materials will be distributed online. A variety of apps such as Nearpod, Edzpuzzle, Flipgrid and more will be used throughout the class to enhance learning.
