The idea for this paper came to me at Silver Bay, YMCA on Lake George in New York State in 2013(!).  I originally submitted it to Environmental Politics in 2014 and had only revisions to make to publish it, but I got involved in Solar Calendar and A Color Removed, then Philosophy without Teachers.  

Years later, after 2020, I realized that I wanted to make sure to publish this paper, though.  Then, in 2023, I said to Silviya Serafimova while I was visiting Urszula Lisowska's institute in Poland that I would submit a paper to Silviya's institute's ethics journal in Bulgaria if I could.  I thought about post-communism in Eastern Europe, the legacy of Marx, Vogel's history in Central Europe through his Austrian citizenship, and that the publication would be Open Access. Having been a long time advisory board member of Ethics and Bioethics (in Central Europe), a Slovak journal, I also was aware of the history of ecological thought in Central and Eastern Europe.  It has historically been refreshingly linked to bioethics without the divide that characterizes the human/non-human dichotomy in U.S. bioethics.  Basically, it's a tradition worth developing.  

All these things led me to locate the paper in Silviya's institute's journal in Sophia, Bulgaria.
