Friendships are part of my scholarship. In the words of one friend, the environmental humanist John Levi Barnard, here are some things you might see me claiming in my work:
The human is ecological: the distinction between humanity and “environment” is something we should get beyond.
Philosophy [i]s a way of life: relationality, human scale, neighborhoods, family, the personal.
Freedom and justness are fundamental elements of our humanity.
We become free by letting go (you’ve sometimes talked about this as “unwinding" also) of systems, structures, infrastructures, and ideologies of domination, extraction, instrumentalization.
By getting beyond narcissism.
Narcissism stunts our humanity and limits our freedom: “humankind isn’t free when humans are locked up in narcissism."
To be truly free is to acknowledge all our relations: to others and the [E]arth.
This is also to be “down”—in literal and figurative sense with the [E]arth and its creatures.
