Philosophy fits into the larger striving to reach out and to grow in this adventure that is life. 

Like human life, philosophy is social and is thus practiced in community.  The heart of community is being able to have good relationships and to talk things through together.  When communication breaks down, philosophy goes sideways.  But remember, communication can be silent.
