2nd Grade

February

Second grade spent the month of February learning about fables. Using Nearpod, we discussed the elements of fables, read a few examples and discussed similarities and differences between fables and other types of literature. After learning more about fables, students were assigned a partner and a fable. They were to read the fable and create a storyboard retelling their fable. Using their storyboard, students created a puppet show summarizing and acting out their fable. Students used a green screen as a background and filmed their puppet shows with Touchcast. Before filming, they typed their scripts into the teleprompter feature on Touchcast. This feature allowed them to film while reading their script. They also picked a background image to place on the greenscreen to make it look like their characters were actually in the scene. Great job 2nd grade!

What is augmented reality? It is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view. Second grade got to see exactly what this meant this month using an app called Quiver. Using the holidays as our theme, students colored a holiday picture and watched their creation "come to life"! There were lots of "oohs" and "awes" as these students saw their present open and Santa Clause come into their vision.

This month second grade was introduced to the STEM concepts of architecture, engineering and design. We read the book, "Iggy Peck, Architect" which is about a 2nd grade boy named Iggy has one passion: building. His parents are proud of his fabulous creations, though they’re sometimes surprised by his materials, such as his tower he built of dirty diapers! When his second-grade teacher declares her dislike of architecture, Iggy faces a challenge. He loves building too much to give it up! Students had to channel their inner Iggy and design a bridge made of toothpicks and marshmallows! They were given graph paper and a design app on the iPads to design their bridges first. After coming up with a great design, they got to build their creations. Check out some of their great designs below!
