Class Overview
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over.
Enrollment Information
Participants must be 15 years old by the last class to enroll.
Participants must attend and engage in all skills sessions, drills, activities, scenarios and demonstrate competency in all required areas.
Practice sessions will require some strenuous physical activity. You are encouraged to check with your healthcare provider before participating. If you have a medial condition or disability that may prevent you from participating, or have questions please contact the Course Instructor.
Course Cost
$325 in the form of Cash, Check (made out to Alex LaVine) or Venmo (@Alex_LaVine)
Course Cost includes: Lifeguard Manual, CPR Mask, Hip Pack, Whistle & Certification
FULL PAYMENT is due on the night of the Prerequisite, receipts will be provided.

TESTING COMPONENTS
To take part in the full course participants must pass all skill components below; two chances are given for each element.
Swim- Tread-Swim Sequence
A. Jump In, submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards (lifeguard)/ 350 (waterfront) using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
Goggles & Swim Caps are allowed.
B. Maintain a position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
C. Swim 50 yards (lifeguard)/ 200 yards (waterfront) using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Timed Event
Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds.
A. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards
The face many be in or out of the water.
Goggles are not allowed.
B. Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
C. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
D. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Underwater Swim (Waterfront Only)
A. Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve 3 diving rings placed 5 yards apart in water 4-7 feet deep.
B. Resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.
ONLINE COURSE INFORMATION
A link with access to the online course work will be provided upon passing the Prerequisite.
A confirmation of online work completion must be provided on the first day of In Person Skill Sessions.
IN PERSON SKILL SESSION TESTING
To successfully pass the course, participants must meet the requirements of all skill components below.
Written exams must have a minimum grade of 80%, two chances are given for each element.
CPR/AED, First Aid & Lifeguarding Skills Written Tests
Waterfront Lifeguarding Skills Written Test (Optional)
In Water Skill Scenarios-
A. Individual- You are graded on your knowledge and execution of a presented scenario.
B. Group- You are graded on your knowledge and execution of a presented scenario while working with other rescuers.

CERTIFICATION
Requirements
Actively participate and demonstrate competency in all required skills.
Attend & successfully pass the prerequisite, in person skill sessions and all tests.
Issuance & Validity
American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding, CPR/AED & First Aid for the Professional Rescuer will be issued.
(Optional with passing of all scenarios & tests) American Red Cross certificate for Waterfront Lifeguarding, CPR/AED & First Aid for the Professional Rescuer will be issued.
Certifications will be valid for 2 years upon completion.
FAILING OF PREREQUISITE
Participants will not be allowed to take part in the course if they fail any element of the prerequisite testing components.
A $25 non-refundable fee will be collected at the completion of testing.
Assessment on skills and Information on future courses will be given for reference.
FAILING OF FULL COURSE
Participants who take the course and fail will be given NO REFUND

CLASS CANCELLATION
Insufficient Numbers Before Prerequisite
Participants will be given 24 hours notice.
After Prerequisite
FULL REFUNDS will be given with 24 hours notice.
Instructor Cancelation Before Prerequisite
Participants will be given 24 hours notice.
After Prerequisite
Adjust to scheduled Makeup days with 24 hours notice given.
FULL REFUNDS and 24 hours notice will be given if UNABLE to use Makeup Days.
Participant Cancelation Before Prerequisite
Notify Instructor as soon as possible, so your spot can be filled
After Prerequisite
Before In Person Skill Sessions $100 Non-Refundable Fee will be collected
After In Person Sessions start you may NOT continue & will forfeit all monies.
MAKEUP CLASSES
Due to the amount of information learned each night, missed classes are not allowed.
Makeup classes will only happen in the event of unforeseen circumstances that prevent a regularly scheduled class from taking place.
