LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson, learners are expected to:
Identify the markings on the tape measure with the measurements it represented
Estimate an exact converted measurement of a decimal measurement to fractional inches
Illustrate how to read a tape measure in metric and imperial measurement markings
A measuring tape for the body is usually 60 inches long, or 1.5 meters long (152 cms). The measurements are in eighths of an inch, which means that one inch is divided into eight equal parts. There are also situations when 1/16th-inch measurement markings are given. The marks on tape measures and rulers used in construction and design work are normally 1/32 of an inch.
Two Types of Tape Measurements
Metric measurement marks indicate measurement values in centimeters, millimeters and meters.
Imperial measurement mark indicates the measurement value in inches, feet, and fractional inches.
The numbers given represent the entire centimeter, and the small lines between the centimeter lines are millimeters. 10 millimeters equals one centimeter, and 100 centimeters is equivalent to one meter.
Scientists use the metric system, but when measuring their bodies, most people use the imperial system, which is inches.
o 1/2 inch is represented as the primary central marking inside the inch ( Half inch)
o The following two little markers signify 1/4 inch (quarter inch) and 3/4 inch (eighth inch) ( three fourth inch)
o 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8 of an inch (eighths of an inch) are represented by the following minuscule markers.
Always remember to "start from 0" when taking body measurement or when measuring objects.
Inch to Millimeter Conversion Chart
(12 inches make a foot. One inch is equal to 2.5 cms or 25 mms.)
