History of Cookies
Hard wafers that resemble cookies have been around for as long as baking has been documented, in part because they carry well, although they were rarely sweet enough to be termed cookies by current standards (Cookie, 2021).
Cookies appear to have originated in Persia around the 7th century AD, shortly after the usage of sugar became widespread in the region. Through the Muslim invasion of Spain, they expanded throughout Europe. They were widespread in all levels of society across Europe by the 14th century, from royal cuisine to street sellers. The figure-shaped gingerbread man was first reported in the 16th century at the court of Elizabeth I of England. She had gingerbread figurines created in the form of some of her prominent visitors and gave them (Cookie, 2021).
Cookies became a natural travel companion as worldwide travel became more common at the period, a modernized version of the trip cakes that had been utilized throughout history. The jumble, a moderately firm cookie made primarily from nuts, sugar, and water, was one of the most popular early cookies, which traveled exceptionally well and became recognized by identical names on every continent (Cookie, 2021).
Cookies came to America through the Dutch in New Amsterdam in the late 1620s. The Dutch word "koekje" was Anglicized to "cookie" or cooky. The earliest reference to cookies in America is in 1703, when "The Dutch in New York provided...'in 1703...at a funeral 800 cookies. (Cookie, 2021).
Introduction to Cookies
A type of small, flattened cake that usually has a crispier consistency than cake and is baked in batches on a large flat pan. Many types of basic cookie dough can be prepared and a variety of ingredients can be added to the basic dough such as chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts.
Cookies are popular as snacks or desserts. Often, the various types of cookies are classified by their shape, an ingredient, or the method used to shape them. As examples, there are cookies referred to as bars to denote a shape, or molasses and sugar cookies named for their ingredients, or molded, pressed and rolled cookies, named for the method of preparing their shape.
