History of Bread
According to legend, the first bread was baked in the Middle East, notably Egypt, approximately 8000 BC. The first known grinding tool was the quern. The grain was crushed, and the bakers created what we now know as chapatis (India) or tortillas in their most basic form (Mexico) (The Origin of Bread, 2017).
Bread is a staple food of humanity for 30,000 years. There is evidence of flour from that time being processed into unleavened bread, according to archaeologists. Cereals and bread became staple foods during the Neolithic period, around 10,000 years ago, when wheat and barley were among the first plants to be domesticated in Mesopotamia and the Nile Valley (History of bread, 2021).
Other cereals, such as rice in East Asia, maize in the Americas, and sorghum in Sub-Saharan Africa, were independently domesticated, breaded, and formed the basis of alternative agricultural systems in other parts of the world. Cereal crops enabled agricultural societies to support much larger populations than previously possible, resulting in the rise of civilized states over time. Bread with leavening first appeared in prehistoric times. Early leavening methods included using a piece of dough from the day before as a sourdough starter (History of bread, 2021).
Bread served as a basic sustenance in medieval Europe, but it also had a unique role. It was included in the table service. A so-called "trencher," which is a stale piece of bread measuring 15 cm by 10 cm, was used as an absorbent plate beneath the entrée. The trencher was eaten, given to the destitute, or fed to the dogs at the end of a meal. Pizza is thought to have originated from trencher bread. Trenchers made of wood began to replace bread in the 15th century (History of bread, 2021).
Introduction to Bread
Bread is a staple food prepared from a dough of flour and water, usually by baking. Throughout recorded history, it has been a prominent food in large parts of the world. It is one of the oldest human-made foods, having been of significant importance since the dawn of agriculture, and plays an essential role in both religious rituals and secular culture.
Bread is baked dough. Dough is the name for the soft mixture which is produced when you mix flour with water. It is a kind of basic recipe. Normally other ingredients are added, such as yeast, eggs, sugar and a fat, such as butter or suet. The kind of dough you make decides whether you will end up with a cake, a suet pudding, a loaf of bread or a tortilla.
Bread are classified into two types, the quick bread and yeast bread.
