A new place where students are collaborating is in the gaming realm. Students are given a task to complete in Minecraft (build a structurally sound house, collect essential resources, or building a civilization) and this is done in groups. They come together to come up with a plan and work together on their task and group project. I would use this with my upper students because there is more freedom associated with it, that some younger students cannot always handle.
Minecraft Education is something where the teacher can restrict what they can do within the game. You can have students complete specific task that you would like them to do. While this may limit creativity a bit, it closes off more of the open world experience and prohibits them from getting too far off task within the game. It promotes collaboration while working together.
Breakout EDU is something that students can collaborate with along with using one of the video based tools. These virtual breakout rooms, push abstract and out-of-the-box thinking. As someone who has done these in class, tailoring them to be online would be simple with a tie in to a video platform like zoom. This would allow students to share their ideas in small groups.
This is a game based platform to be used with caution. The collaboration is that students can create games and designs together that can be played by any of the open world characters. This does allow students to showcase their designs to other players and see what others think of their designs and rate them. This feedback could be good or bad depending on age and maturity of students.
