SAFE SALTING
AS THE PROSPECT OF COLDER TEMPS AND FREEZING WEATHER APPROACH, CAROLINA BOMANITE WANTS TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE TOOLS YOU NEED AS A PROPERTY MANAGER OR OWNER AS IT APPLIES TO SAFELY SALTING
OVER THE YEARS WE HAVE SEEN CONSIDERABLE CHLORIDE DAMAGE TO CONCRETE MAINLY FROM OVERAPPLICATION AND MISUSE OF MATERIALS
THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS PROVIDED STRICTLY FOR YOUR USE. WE MAY NO CLAIMS, NOR DO WE ENDORSE ANY PARTICULAR PRODUCTS TO BE USED ON CONCRETE FOR THE PURPOSE OF DEICING. ASK YOUR SUPPLIER TO PROVIDE YOU WITH MATERIALS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO BE SAFE WHEN USED ON CONCRETE
CAROLINA BOMANITE IS A SAFE SALTING LEVEL 1 CERTIFIED CONTRACTOR
THE FIRST PLACE TO START TO DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE SAFE SALT POLICY IS EITHER MEETING WITH YOUR EMPLOYEES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TASK OF DEICING OR YOUR SUBCONTRACTOR EMPLOYED FOR THAT PURPOSE. WE CANNOT STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATING EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS!!!
Start by having a talk with all the persons involved in implementing a winter plan - discuss the needs and requirements.
Coordinate a team that will respond to an event with the proper plan and strategy. Where will you store materials if you own multiple properties? How has deicing and snow removal been done in the past? Is there data that you can use?
Assess the tools and equipment required in order to provide safe passage during freezing weather.
If you lack the equipment required, make plans now to purchase ahead of storm or snow event when inventories are low.
Research the materials you plan on using and talk to your supplier regarding the safety for use on concrete.
Purchase the required amount of materials based on storm data collected from previous years. Store properly.
Test and calibrate your equipment based on the manufacturers suggested rates. Use a tarp or a marked area of a parking lot to determine your product use in #/SF. Record the equipment settings for future use.
Make a snow plan - detail what areas are critical path and areas to be assigned less critical. Where would you stockpile snow in a large snowfall event? Think about drainage and plant and turf safety...
Lastly - follow the plan, don't over apply - more is not better, use the least amount of material required to provide the result. Deicing is a science of allowing materials to work as directed. Follow the temps, record the data!
