For the first semester final students were tasked with writing a five to seven pages on a theme in art history. They had to choose a theme then find at least five artworks from the curriculum that fit that theme. Then prove that by citing visual and contextual evidence.
The first summative of second semester, student researched a medieval poem and a medieval font. We were covering various Illuminated Manuscripts and students were tasked with applying that knowledge and create their own. The history of Illuminated Manuscripts goes back to the Medieval era, in monasteries monks would usually copy out the Bible. But soon these highly decorated and expensive manuscripts became so popular that other books were copied as well. Some books were the most expensive thing that a noble may own. These handwritten and hand painted books sometimes contained semiprecious gems on the cover and were richly illuminated with gold or silver. Illuminated literally means to give light too, and that is exactly what was done by adding silver and gold leaf to the pages of a manuscript.
In order to break up the monotony of lecture and after the AP exam we sat down to create memes of the artwork on the curriculum. Just to put a little fun into school.
