Tinkercad released a series of starters to help students get going with CAD drafting in their introductory workspace. Check out the starters here. Make your own copy of this document to help students organize and document their readiness to tackle your first design challenge.
Tinkercad Tutorials: I remain a fan of the original tutorials embedded in the "Learn" tab of Tinkercad. These tutorials walk users through the basic skills to get up and running with CAD drafting in Tinkercad in a snap and are interactive! As students and teachers work through the initial process of learning how to draft objects in the workspace in Tinkercad, I wanted to create some guides to help users in their own process. I found that demonstrating these techniques in class is important, but often times with technical instruction, it is important to have a resource where users can go at their own pace to access or re-access particular instructions on various techniques. I found the initial process of learning how to draft in Autodesk 123D somewhat frustrating and found a lack of resources that could provide just-in-time instruction. Much of my practice was independent and took place outside of class where I didn’t have an expert to consult, so it is my hope that these resources can help new users self navigate successfully through the initial tutorials. These video guides and sample answer keys, coupled with the excellent instruction provided within the Tinkercad tutorials themselves should provide an optimal opportunity for successful initial outcomes in the realm of CAD drafting. Tinker-Tips: As you get more familiar with how to use Tinkercad, these shortcuts and tips will help you become a more advanced user and designer! Thanks to the folks at Tinkercad and Autodesk, who have their own, awesome Autodesk Tinkercad Youtube channel where you can find videos like this and others that highlight techniques and projects for Tinkercad users and educators. Check them out!
Note- the volume on this video is quite loud and a little shocking, especially if you have earbuds in. I recommend you turn the volume down before clicking!
Keyboard Shortcuts in Tinkercad: As a part of teaching my Design and Modeling class, I have made an effort to connect with industry professionals and have had a number of CAD design professionals come speak to my students about their role in the industry. One of the engineers spoke to students about the power of mastering keyboard shortcuts when optimizing the use of any CAD design software. I have certainly noticed my own efficiency interacting with a variety of software increases when I know and can apply different keyboard shortcuts. With this in mind, I found that Tinkercad has an entire section of keyboard shortcuts highlighted on their “learn” page. I used this to create a visual guide to the shortcuts, the screenshots of which allowed me to create a visual Quizlet set to help develop a system by which students can increase their awareness of the various shortcuts, practice with them at their own pace, and work towards integrating them into their own CAD drafting projects.
Want to test your knowledge of the keyboard shortcuts in Tinkercad? Quizlet is a great way to practice and interact with the many shortcuts available to help streamline your design process. Check out the visual Quizlet set I created to help you become a shortcut master!
