Expedition Hooks

Case Study 1 - Hook 1

The children were hooked into their leanring through the completion of a number of engaging and exicitng activities in their first week. This focused on our first Case Study, with the children creating learning about the Vikings affinity with mythology and dragons. Children created dragon inspired art work using ancient techniques and clay, cooked using Viking recipes and investigated the chaos left behind when a dragon visited our school.

'I liked the dragon in the hall because I got to write about it and it was loud', Ruby S (Year 4)

'The best part was the hall because there were giant footsteps', Tommy (Year 4)

'My favourite was making the dragon eye because we were using clay and I enjoyed it', Jack (Year 4)

'I loved reading the poem because I loved using expression', Lydia B (Year 4)

Case Study 1, Hook 2

The children were hooked further into our first Case Study with a visit to Murton Park, York, to take part in an immersive Viking experience day. The children learnt about farming and food in the Viking age, pottery and household tasks. They took turns on guard duty and learnt how to defend the Viking village from attack.

Case Study 2, Hook 1

The children were hooked into their learning with a day celebrating the best parts of Afghan culture. We are going to be looking into the country, as links will soon be opening up to Afghan refugees. The children were able to fly kites, taste Afghan good and even learn some Pashto Dari, Afghanistan's main language. This has hooked the children into their writing, as they write a newspaper article on the current events taking place in the country.

Case Study 2, Hook 2

Year 3 and 4 were very lucky to be able to talk to the Conversation Club. The Conversation Club help refugees settle into the country, after escaping their home for fear of being unsafe. LKS2 were interested in hearing about their journey over and how long it will take them to settle into life. This was really important to understand that Coming to Doncaster was not always a positive thing, but offers a chance of hope. Check out our pictures of what happened during this interesting chat!
