Case Study Overview:
In our final case study, we looked at Christianity and Nativity story. We explored what is the same and different between Christianity and Hinduism. We then got to go on an exciting walk to our local church to look at the stained glass windows and to explore religious symbols. From this, we created stained glass windows for our classrooms to immerse our learning environment. We then sequenced the story and retold it in our own words.. From this we were able to explore the different characters in the story and create a role on the wall for them to explore words that linked to them. This helped us with our vocabulary.
Once we had explored Christianity, we linked this back to our final product and wrote a gift tag explaining what the product was. We wanted to remember that gifts do not always have to be bought, they can be made so that they are meaningful to us and precious, just like the gifts in the nativity.
The Learning Targets for this Case Study were:
Year 1:
becoming very familiar with key stories, fairy stories and traditional tales, retelling them and considering their particular characteristics
discussing word meanings, linking new meanings to those already known
drawing on what they already know or on background information and vocabulary provided by the teacher
discussing the significance of the title and events
making inferences on the basis of what is being said and done
predicting what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far
participate in discussion about what is read to them, taking turns and listening to what others say
explain clearly their understanding of what is read to them.
Year 2:
discussing the sequence of events in books and how items of information are related
discussing and clarifying the meanings of words, linking new meanings to known vocabulary
checking that the text makes sense to them as they read and correcting inaccurate reading
making inferences on the basis of what is being said and done answering and asking questions predicting what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far
becoming increasingly familiar with and retelling a wider range of stories, fairy stories and traditional tales
answering and asking questions
Week 6
This week, we have started to learn all about Christianity and the Nativity story. We began by looking at different pictures and sorting them between Christianity and Hinduism to compare the two religions. We worked out that the story of Diwali and the story of the Nativity have the same message - light over dark, good over evil. Both stories had light in them to guide the way!
We really enjoyed looking at all of the pictures around Christianity and we were particularly interested in the church and the stained glass windows, so we took a walk to go and see some!
We loved going on our walk, but it definitely tired us out! In the afternoon (after a sneaky hot chocolate to warm up) we made our stained glass windows to go up in our classroom. Our classroom windows look beautiful now!
We also had a visitor into school this week - Reverend Paul! We loved having Reverend Paul in because he taught us so much about Christianity and he could answer all of the questions we had.
Week 7
This week, we finished off our expedition by reading, acting out and ordering the Nativity story. We really enjoyed this story and learnt lots about the characters in it. We re-wrote the story in our writing lessons using what we had learnt in expedition.
